Niagara Falls, Canada Continues to Earn Moniker “Honeymoon Capital of the World” After Over 200 years

PRWeb has a press release/article from Niagara Falls Tourism:

Stories vary as to how Niagara Falls became “Honeymoon Capital of the World.” Some attribute it to Aaron Burr’s daughter, Theodosia, who chose a Niagara Falls honeymoon in 1801. Others say it was Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother–Jerome–who sparked the tradition in 1804. Nevertheless, today over 50,000 honeymooners choose a Niagara Falls getaway each year, and the Canadian destination maintains its popularity.

Niagara Falls tightrope walker sets sights on the brink

The Associated Press has an article that has been picked up by a number of newspapers. This link is to USA Today:

For more than 40 years, visitors to this tourist town have gazed upward to a fiberglass likeness of 19th century tightrope walker Charles Blondin occupying not only his fabled wire, but his place as Niagara Falls’ most famous funambulist.

This summer, tourists also have been bending their necks for a flesh-and-blood contemporary. Twice each day, Jay Cochrane has traversed a wire between two 20-story towers set 1,000 feet (300 meters) apart, addressing onlookers with a showman’s skills honed over a 50-year career.

“Welcome to Canada!” he announces from above as his electric blue costume’s sequins spark like flashbulbs in the sun.

The article is a little out-dated, but still talks about Mr. Cochrane’s quest to walk over the falls.

I still have the petition going, and if you haven’t signed it, please do.

Don’t forget to sign the petition!

The Kratt Brothers

If you have kids that are under 10, then the chances are that at some point you’ve seen or heard of Zoboomafoo. He’s a leaping lemur on a kids show that is “hosted” by the Kratt Brothers, Chris and Martin

This isn’t earth shattering, but since I like to post about all things Niagara Falls, I figured I’d post this. I was on a web site about them, and one of pages mentioned that on May 18, 2002 they were the Grand Marshals of the “Maid in the Mist Parade” to open the Spring Festival in Niagara Falls, Ontario Canada.

Salci raises stakes in casino talks

From the Niagara Falls Review:

City hall and tourism operators turned up the heat on Liberal Premier Dalton McGuinty to make a long-term commitment to keep Casino Niagara open. The “Committee to Save Niagara Jobs” rolled out a website Friday with the message “Casino Niagara Must Stay Open.”

The site - www.saveniagarajobs.ca - shows a smiling, young girl with her family on a sofa in the background watching TV.

“Housing, feeding and clothing a family isn’t a game,” the message reads. Nearly 400 people have signed an online petition since Friday.

Celebrating 70 years of the Oakes Garden Theatre

From the Niagara Falls Review:

One of Niagara Falls’s most famous and beautiful attractions celebrated its 70th birthday last Tuesday.

It was on September 18, 1937, that Oakes Garden Theatre was officially opened. This extraordinary blend of architectural and horticultural skills is visited and admired by countless numbers of people each year.

Located on the north side of Clifton Hill between Falls Avenue and River Road, the site has considerable historical significance. It was here that Niagara Falls’s most prominent 19th century hotel was located. Known as the Clifton House, it was constructed in 1833, and had a number of additions in the years that followed.

Light the Falls with hope on Friday

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Niagara Falls will be bathed in blue, yellow and purple Friday to celebrate World Alzheimer Day.

The Horseshoe Falls will be blue and yellow, the official colours of the Canadian Alzheimer Society, while the American Falls will be lit in purple to represent the Alzheimer’s Association of Western New York.

Hotel on Robinson, parking on Stanley

For some time now, Canadian Niagara Hotels has had approval from the city for a hotel on a small piece of property by the Jolley Cut. The other day I was walking along Robinson Street, and there is some parking between Robinson Street and Murray Street that has big billboards for the Canadian Niagara Hotels properties (hotels, restaurants and attractions). I always assumed the property was owned by them.

There is now a sign on the property announcing a city meeting to approve the use of that space as parking for a hotel that will be at 5392 Robinson St.

I pulled up maps from both Google and Microsoft, but it is hard to see exactly where that property is. The City of Niagara Falls site lists the site on their Proposed and New Development Projects page, and they have a nice map that shows the lot:

Sure enough, when I was by the lot the other day, they have a copy of that same sign. The lot is currently being used as a parking lot.

Does this indicate that Canadian Niagara Hotels is going to start building soon?

Loonie soars; Canadian dollar scales new heights, raising concern for jobs, tourism markets

From the Niagara Falls Review:

For the first time since the 1970s, Frank Herman walked into a local gas station with American money and had to pay exchange.

“I asked how much (gas) I could put in for US$20 and I was told I” could only get C$19 worth, he said, after filling up as the Canadian dollar crept toward parity with the American greenback.

“That really bothered me. I felt ripped off. I’ve never spent money on gas in the U.S. because I don’t believe in it - I believe in supporting businesses right here.”

Spicy Olive for sale

Spicy Olive logo

As Dan mentioned in a previous comment, the Spicy Olive restaurant is for sale. The renovations to the Horror Manor building and the change to Spicy Olive was one of the first things I reported on. That was in April/May 2005. I’m surprised that the place is going to change owners so soon.

The Remax site (this link takes you right to the property listing page for Spicy Olive) shows the listing price at $2,000,000!

I have a few pictures of Spicy Olive in the Niagara Falls Image Gallery.

Cirque Niagara promo video from Woodbine

Yesterday I posted about the early closing of Avaia. I recently came across this excellent Woodbine promotional video for Avaia:
