He was, the local press marvelled, “by far the most intrepid performer who ever dared the rocks and rapids of the Niagara River.”
This lavish praise was directed to Clifford Calverley, a talented tightrope walker who had dazzled a huge crowd with his expertise on the wire. The performance took place on the afternoon of Wednesday, Oct. 12, 1892. Calverley’s wirerope, 2.5 centimetres thick and 273 metres long, was stretched across the Niagara River gorge a short distance upstream from the Railway Suspension Bridge, which stood where the Whirlpool Rapids Bridge is now.
Calverley was not the first tightrope artist to perform at Niagara Falls. He was, in fact, the eighth, the first being the great Blondin who was here in 1859 and 1860. However, he soon showed his ability on the wire was as good as any of his predecessors.

There were two words everyone tip-toed around last week when Niagara Falls MP Rob Nicholson finally confirmed Ottawa was chipping in to build a convention centre in the Fallsview area. “White elephant” dared not rear its ugly head, it seemed. Nicholson, Mayor Ted Salci and convention centre co-ordinator Dragan Matovic danced all around the phrase as they offered assurances the proposed $100-million convention centre will never become a burden on local taxpayers. It was almost like uttering the words might jinx it.

Casino Niagara is here to stay. The Ontario government reached a long-term arrangement with owners of the casino’s current location Friday and will make it official within days, Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor said Friday afternoon.
“By some time next week there will be a formal announcement,” Craitor said after a closed-door meeting held at city hall Friday afternoon among Ontario Lottery and Gaming representatives, city officials and business owners from the Clifton Hill area. “Everything seems to have fallen in place.”
