Best Western keycard

Another in my series on keycards

I’m not sure which hotel this is for, but I found a Best Western keycard the other day. The information on the front of the card is about their points program. There isn’t anything that is specific to any hotel.

Map of Canada puzzle

My 5-year-old son has a small puzzle that is a map of Canada.

It’s kind of hard to see, but each province has a few small drawings (almost like icons) showing things that the province is famous for. In Ontario, among other things, there is a drawing of the CN Tower, and a drawing of Niagara Falls.

I’m probably being too picky here, but the drawing looks like Niagara Falls and Bridal Veil Falls, which are both in the United States. The Horseshoe Falls are the ones in Canada.

Craitor a frequent user of parks commission free golf

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Niagara Falls MPP Kim Craitor has booked 158 tee-off times for free rounds of golf at Niagara Parks Commission golf courses since he was elected in 2003.

He uses the perk the parks commission offers public officials to promote the community to guests and to make up for time his job takes him away from his family.

“I acknowledge I like golfing,” Craitor said. “So we use it. I also use it for promoting Niagara Falls.”

Since 2004, the Ussher’s Creek course at the Legends on the Niagara complex near Chippawa has been his favourite spot. But Craitor mixes it up, playing the Battlefield course at Legends or the Whirlpool course, along the Niagara Parkway.

“Key to Niagara” magazine

There are lots of different magazines, leaflets, pamphlets, and maps that are offered free to visitors. Almost all of them are made up entirely of ads and coupons. (getting off track for a bit, don’t get me started about the whole coupon thing… coupons are everywhere and hardly anyone pays full price… let’s save some trees and eliminate the coupons and just lower the price by the $1 that the coupon is for… ok, back on track now…)

One of the better ones out there is Key to Niagara Magazine. It is approximately 5″x7″ and actually has useful information. It isn’t really a coupon book as there are only a couple of ads that have a coupon. The magazine is published by Osprey Media, the same publisher as the Niagara Falls Review. There are many short articles, details of various events, and of course ads for surrounding hotels and attractions.

Below is the Summer 2007 issue. Be sure to pick one up as you are out and around.

One week… The Life & Times of Mark D

Here is a blog posting from someone who came to Niagara Falls to celebrate their 4th anniversary:

Last Thursday, the wife and I celebrated our fourth anniversary in Niagara Falls, Canada…

We stayed at the Ramada Fallsview, which is at the top of the Konica - Minolta Tower. The tower is just south of the Skylon tower. So we got to the hotel and we expected a city-view room. For some reason we got upgraded. We had a room on the 28th floor overlooking the beautiful Horseshoe Falls. Much of the first day involved me looking out the window and staring at the falls. To this day I am unsure on how we got the room but I am not going to complain.

‘Drive the Falls’ challenge

From GOLFmagic:

A Canadian entrepreneur is hoping to set up a contest in which the world’s longest drivers try to smash a golf ball over the Niagara River at the world famous Horseshoe Falls.

Gary Nickerson, a 61-year-old who claims he can hit a ball over 300 yards, aims to gather the world’s best strikers to attempt the feat for the chance to claim a huge cash bonus and raise money for charity.

Double major champion John Daly attempted the feat in April 2005 as part of a publicity stunt to promote the nearby Thundering Waters golf resort but narrowly failed.

Clifton Hill Resorts Update - September 2007

Yesterday I received the latest issue of the Clifton Hill Resorts Update newsletter. They are promoting the same sorts of packages they always promote. They also highlight the Big Becky project.

Stereographs of Niagara Falls a Century Ago

niagara_falls_stereograph.jpg

Greenwich Time, a newspaper in Connecticut, has some very old pictures of Niagara Falls on their web site. There are 19 of them, all of them from the Library of Congress. Because of the age and size of them, it is hard to see the detail of the pictures. The Library of Congress site has more detailed pictures which I’ll link to another time.

Trip to Niagara Falls August 20-25, 2007

Here is another blog entry from someone who drove from Connecticut to Niagara Falls and spent several days here:

Monday- we left Connecticut around 9 am and arrived in Ontario Canada around 4:30 p.m. We checked in at Days Inn Hotel which is North of the Falls and facing the gorge of the falls.

There are lots of small pictures from their trip.

They’re running for water worldwide

From the Niagara Falls Review:

They’ve been running around the world for water for the past three months and on Tuesday, they breezed by Niagara Falls where more than six million cubic feet of water flows over the Horseshoe Falls every minute during peak hours.

A team of 20 international citizen runners representing 13 countries have been trotting around the globe since June to raise money to help alleviate the burden placed on more than a billion people who, every day, must drink unsafe local water or travel long distances on foot to search for it.

Running relay-style for 24 hours a day seven days a week, the team arrived in Niagara Falls Tuesday. It was the 89th day of their 95-day journey.
