I’m escaping for a few days and won’t be posting anything until Thursday. Feel free to leave any comments, observations, links, etc. in the comments of this post and I’ll check into it when I get back.

Planet Feedback has a letter that someone wrote to the Best Western Cairn Croft:
I went to the Best Western Cairn Croft hotel in Niagara Falls, Ontario for the Canada Day long weekend.
The person got stuck in traffic after the fireworks.
Being in a city that I didn’t know after 11:00pm, I called the hotel hoping that they could give me directions back. I had pulled over so that my friend could write them down, but was told to keep going as he (Mike) talked me through it.
He told me when and where to turn, what landmark to look for and before I knew it, I was back in the comfort of my room.
Mike took a stressful situation and made it all better.
I just thought that in an industry that seems to perpetually get complaints, it might be nice to get a compliment for a change.
From the Buffalo News:
Dave Price, weather anchor for “The Early Show†on CBS, took one bite of an Anchor Bar chicken wing with suicide sauce Thursday morning and was too shocked to give the national weather report.
“I can’t swallow right now,†Price choked into the camera as he stood at Terrapin Point on Goat Island in front of dozens of onlookers and the mist from the falls.
Niagara Falls State Park got its second dose of national exposure for the summer Thursday when Price and “The Early Show†rolled in to showcase the falls as one of the nation’s great vacation destinations.
From the Niagara Falls Review:
After another night of live animals, loud music and scantily-clad women, Greg Frewin just wants to chill.
After all, he’s about to do it all over again in 10 hours.
As Canada’s most decorated magician arrives for a morning interview, you half-expect entrance music. Everything he does is flashy, soaked in show biz. But today, the snazzy suit is replaced by shorts and a wrinkled shirt. Instead of a tiger, he’s holding a half-empty coffee cup. Instead of makeup, there’s a bit of sag under his eyes. One of his fingers is in a splint.
The show is at night, but between running a business, working the phones and dropping his kids off, he does most of his magic during the day.
Similar to NBC, CBS’s morning show, The Early Show, was in Niagara Falls:
If you decide to vacation at Niagara Falls, be prepared to become damp.
Whether you’re fishing, boating or sliding under the Falls on the Maid of the Mist, chances are you’ll want to dry off at some point.
Dave Price learned this when he spent the day with Derek Presti, who was his park ambassador for the day. Presti, who works at the Niagara Falls State Park — the oldest state park in the United States — took him around the area so he could get his bearings.
From Niagara This Week:
Tourism officials are hoping increased marketing will bring visitors to the city in large numbers in July and August.
“We’ve never recovered from SARS or 9/11,” said Wayne Thomson, the chair of Niagara Falls Tourism. “Once you’re down it’s hard to turn the tide.”
On Tuesday I received the latest issue of the Clifton Hill Resorts Update newsletter. They are promoting the same sorts of packages they always promote.

From Niagara This Week:
For nearly five decades, Marineland has used images of dancing mascots and whales kissing kids to persuade families that their park is a friendly and fun environment.
Millions have been convinced by 30-second fun-in-the-sun commercials and the park’s unforgettable jingle, but animal rights groups insist the facility is a prison for its captive animals.
While the theme park continues to grow in size and popularity every summer, one thing has become clear in recent years: not everyone “loves” Marineland.
As I’ve mentioned a couple of time, I have a season pass to Marineland and have already been a few times this year. The last couple of times that I’ve gone I’ve spent a lot of time in Friendship Cove to watch the Orca (killer) whales. Before Friendship Cove was finished a few years ago, the whales were in much smaller tanks in King Waldorf’s stadium. They would perform shows in the stadium several times a day, including having someone riding on them. Whether it was pressure from activist groups, or another reason, these sorts of performances have stopped. Friendship Cove is gigantic compared to where they used to live, so there is a lot more room for them to swim around. The only performances now are “splash shows” where the whales do a few tricks like jumping out of the water, splashing people watching with their tail, etc. There are only 4 or 5 performances during the day, and they last about 15 minutes.
I’ve taken quite a few pictures and put them in the Summer 2007 Orca Whale Splash Show gallery. The thumbnails below are a sample of the pictures. You can see more thumbnails and the larger versions of all the pictures in the gallery.

I’ve also put together a 4:30 video of the splash show.
