Accident on Niagara SkyWheel’s sister Ferris wheel

The Niagara SkyWheel is an R60 Giant Wheel by Ronald Bussink and Chance Morgan. As Sue mentioned, there was a Ferris wheel in Korea where there was an accident where several people died. Based on the pictures, it appears that one of the gondolas turned on its side, and the people inside the gondola fell out the window when it popped out. I thought the Ferris wheel looked the same as Niagara SkyWheel, but I’ve only been able to find one article that actually mentions the rides manufacturer, Ronald Bussink. Apparently the Sea World Eye in Australia is the same sort of Ferris wheel. The operator decided that they would shut down the ride until they got assurances from the manufacturer that everything was ok. The Niagara SkyWheel has kept running since the accident, so apparently HOCO doesn’t have the same concerns or their concerns were resolved right away by the manufacturer.

Rachelle Rachelle - Niagara Falls

Here is a link to another Live Journal entry for someone reporting on their visit to Niagara Falls. There are quite a few pictures. I know these people are total strangers, but it’s interesting seeing what they found interesting, seeing the pictures, etc.

Don’t book your room just yet

From Niagara This Week:

The Niagara Parks Commission is holding off on the idea of adding on-site accommodations at its Legends on the Niagara Golf Course after a disappointing response to its call for proposals.

Niagara Parks put the call out last fall for proposals to enhance Legends as a world-class golf course, lengthen its golf season and add more golf opportunities.

When the call went out, John Kernahan, general manager for Niagara Parks, said the next logical step for the course could be adding some sort of accommodations or maybe an all-seasons training facility.

“It was very disappointing,” said Kernahan. “We had two or three bids and they were not what we were hoping for. We decided to let that go for now.

Council wants casino commitment

From the Niagara Falls Review:

City councillors are putting the pressure on provincial candidates, with an election looming, to secure the long-term future of Casino Niagara. But Liberal MPP Kim Craitor, Conservative challenger Bart Maves and local NDP president Sharon Shearing say the issue has been settled - it should stay open.

“Nobody has ever talked, at Queen’s Park, about closing Casino Niagara,” said Craitor, a member of the Liberal government since 2003.

On Monday, Coun. Jim Diodati brought up a four-year-old Review article in which Dalton McGuinty, then Ontario’s Opposition leader, said a Liberal government would keep Casino Niagara open permanently. City council asked the premier to repeat that pledge now that the government is into lease negotiations with the owner of the casino building.
