Niagara Falls prophesied as site of Second Coming

From the Buffalo News:

The Second Coming of Christ will occur in Niagara Falls, Isaiah Robertson believes.

“The revival of Jesus Christ will start right here,” he said. “God said he would take his glory from one of the wonders of the world — and that wonder is Niagara Falls.”

Millions of Christians believe in the Second Coming of Christ, in which the Christian savior will return to earth for a final judgment of both the living and the dead.

According to the Old Testament prophecy, “I will show wonders in the heaven and in the earth: blood and fire and pillars of smoke. The sun shall be turned into darkness and the moon into blood, before the coming of the great and terrible day of the Lord.”

Robertson has his own personal take on how things will unfold and has turned his city home, yard and church into symbols of his faith.

“Niagara Falls is a holy place, like Jerusalem,” he said. “The sound of the water going over the falls is the voice of God.”

Prince who was never king visited Niagara Falls in 1919

From the Niagara Falls Review:

This photograph was taken Oct. 19, 1919, at Dr. Harry Grant’s home, Victoria Place, which was located on the brow of the high bank overlooking Queen Victoria Park, about half way between the foot of Robinson Street and Clifton Hill.

The man in the centre of the group, with his right hand on his lapel, is H.R.H. Edward, the Prince of Wales, who was on an official visit to Niagara Falls that day.

Dr. Grant, an oculist who had practised in Buffalo, was hosting a luncheon at Victoria Place with the 25-year-old popular prince as the guest of honour.

Tourism agency gets more cash

From Niagara This Week:

The tourism industry deserves the city’s support, says the head of Niagara Falls Tourism, as council bucked a trend that would have cut funding for the agency over the next few years.

After hearing a presentation from Anna Pierce, head of Niagara Falls Tourism, during a corporate services meeting Monday where council heard a request for funding, council allocated $400,000 to its budget for the agency, about $120,000 more than it gave last year.

“I’m extremely pleased with the reception by council,” said Pierce after the meeting. “I think everyone realizes the economic impact in Niagara Falls is so significant we can’t ignore it.

The problem with stock photography

I don’t know if I’ve mentioned this before, but from the time that the Niagara SkyWheel opened, they’ve been using a picture of the SkyWheel with a woman and a child in front of it. They have their backs to the SkyWheel and they are looking up. It has always annoyed me for a couple of reasons… You can definitely tell it is stock photography. Come on… be creative and take your own picture! The other thing is that the people aren’t looking at the wheel. They are looking away from it. Are they looking at the Casino Niagara tower? It just looks odd to me.

The following is a screenshot from the Clifton Hill web site (taken today) showing the picture:

My annoyance with the image for the first reason (stock photography) was emphasized yesterday when I found out about a promotion that Black’s Photography is doing. Black’s is a well-known, good quality store in Canada where they sell cameras, frames, develop pictures, etc. This weekend they are having a Customer Appreciation Event, and if you print off their invitation, you get a free 8×10. Notice anything similar about the picture they used?

Did Black’s use a HOCO photo without permission? Did someone submit a photo of this family looking at the Casino Niagara tower? I’m confused :-)

Wait a minute - those are our falls!

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Oh, Can-ada! The USA is closer than ever.

The Bush administration appears to have annexed a major Canadian landmark as part of a slick new campaign to promote U.S. tourism and welcome foreign visitors to America.

A Disney-produced promotional video released last week by the departments of State and Homeland Security highlights majestic American landscapes, from New England’s colourful fall foliage and the Grand Canyon to the Rocky Mountains and Hawaii’s pounding surf…

About four minutes into the seven-minute production, viewers are treated to the impressive sight and sound of water roaring over Niagara Falls before the screen shifts to the Lincoln Memorial.

In showing the natural wonder, Disney’s filmmakers, however, chose the Horseshoe Falls, the only one of Niagara’s three waterfalls to lie on the Canadian side of the border separating western New York state from southern Ontario province.

A visit to Bronto’s Adventure Playland

Back near the end of September I took my family to the newest attraction on Clifton Hill, Bronto’s Adventure Playland (I’d link to the web site, but Niagara Clifton Group still hasn’t update their website with any information yet).

20070924_bronto_ticket.jpg

The attraction is essentially a giant, enclosed jungle gym (a lot of it was done by Prime Play). Everyone can go on it (even adults), but it is definitely for the kids. As you walk into the main area, on the right-hand side is a small room full of soft, spongy balls. There are several contraptions in the room where you can load the balls and they shoot throughout the entire place. There is also a big “volcano” which can be loaded with balls. The kids then press a button and the burst up into the sky. Since this all works with air compressors, the place is loader than I expected. On the left side is the area that you can climb up. There are rope ladders, staggered steps, and slides which kids can wiggle up and down through.

There are also two other play ares inside underneath the driveway/parking lot of the Travelodge. One is a small jungle gym, the other is one for the kiddies. As of the time I was in there, there is no sign of a VeggieTales play area at all. All they had was some VeggieTales merchandise in the store.

Overall, my kids absolutely loved it! My 5-year-old ran around non-stop for 45 minutes. His face was red from running around, but he wanted to keep going. My 3-year-old also had a great time, but since he isn’t as mobile as my older son, he didn’t have as good a time.

I took some pictures while I was there. As is always the case, you can see some of the thumbnails below, and view all of the thumbnails and larger pictures in the Bronto’s Adventure Playland in Summer 2007 gallery.

I also posted a video of Bronto’s Adventure Playland. The video is about a minute and a half and shows the “volcano” erupting as well as provides an overview of the attraction.

Niagara Free Fall almost complete?

The other day I was by the Niagara Free Fall location and it looks like the wind tunnel is done. I wonder when they are going to open…

More hotels sign onto Sleep Cheap event

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Mark your calendar, but don’t pick up the phone just yet.

This year’s Sleep Cheap Charities Reap event will take place over four nights, from Monday, Nov. 26 to Thursday, Nov. 29.

Participating hotels will offer room rates of $35 per night for a standard room, $45 for a fallsview room and $65 for a whirlpool or waterpark room.

While the promotion days have been scheduled, the reservation days have not.

Has local tourism ‘fallen off radar’ of U.S.?

From the Niagara Falls Review:

“When we were seated in the little ferry-boat, and were crossing the swollen river immediately before both cataracts, I began to feel what it was: But I was in a manner stunned, and unable to comprehend the vastness of the scene. It was not until I came on Table Rock, and looked - Great Heaven, on what a fall of bright-green water! - that it came upon me in its full might and majesty.”

- Charles Dickens, “American Notes,” 1842.

Travellers have been awed by the thundering cataracts since Father Louis Hennepin first clapped eyes on what many consider to be one of the world’s natural wonders more than three centuries ago.
