Niagara Falls, Canada Continues to Earn Moniker “Honeymoon Capital of the World” After Over 200 years

PRWeb has a press release/article from Niagara Falls Tourism:

Stories vary as to how Niagara Falls became “Honeymoon Capital of the World.” Some attribute it to Aaron Burr’s daughter, Theodosia, who chose a Niagara Falls honeymoon in 1801. Others say it was Napoleon Bonaparte’s brother–Jerome–who sparked the tradition in 1804. Nevertheless, today over 50,000 honeymooners choose a Niagara Falls getaway each year, and the Canadian destination maintains its popularity.

I agree that there is a certain majesty of Niagara Falls that draws honeymooners in.

Recently my newlywed wife and I had booked a room in The Oakes Overlooking the Falls about six weeks prior to the actual honeymoon. We were enchanted with the thought of looking out of out window and seeing the falls. It was truly going to be a perfect week.

Two days prior to our wedding we received a call from The Oakes saying “due to circumstances beyond their control (overbooking in other words) they could not honour the reservation. Can you believe that? Two days prior to the honeymoon and we are being told that they simply could not honour our guaranteed reservation. Had I canccelled at this point, I am certain there would have been a fee charged to the credit card on file though.

They were more than happy to move us to the less popular and less than attractive Days Inn overlooking “beautiful” Victoria Street (if you have ever seen Victoria Street you would know it is a cruddy looking view) at full rates.

When I complained to the BBB about it, the GM of the hotel Mr. Jim Bertulli simply lied and told us he was “going” to give us half off as a surprise. Unfortunately, or fortunately because I refused to spend a dime with Niagara Hospitality I was already checked in to the beautiful Marriott Courtyard with a breathtaking view. I called to express my concern with the CEO of Niagara Hospitality and to be blunt, I guess a customer whose honeymoon was nearly ruined wasn’t important and I have yet to rate a call back.

Customer service is not what it is cracked up to be at The Oakes unless you have plenty of money to throw around. If you have booked or are planning on booking, think twice and make a back up reservation because you may be bumped for more important people other than honeymooners looking to spend their money in the city of Niagara Falls.

If I were you Keith,Id copy and paste your post on the Tripadvisor forums and strike the hotel back in the bottom line. Millions of travelers use the site’s reviews to plan vacations.

Is that good or bad? i’m confused.

Vince Kerrio who is a Niagara Falls council member and who also seems to be influential in goings on in the Fallsview District including the newly funded Convention Center, is the owner of the Oaks Hotel. Perhaps if you would like to let your feelings be known I suggest you email him. He always seems to be personable so maybe you can get this resolved with him. I hope your Wedding went well! kerrio@overlookingthefalls.com
