Skylon elevator carrying 20 people malfunctions

From the Buffalo News:

Twenty people scrambled to safety after an elevator malfunction left them stuck inside one of the yellow bug-like lifts near the top of the 520-foot Skylon Tower, the city’s tallest structure.

The elevator stopped at about 1:30 p.m. Tuesday between floors to the Summit Suite dining room and the observation deck, Lee Carr, the Skylon’s director of marketing, said Wednesday.

I went up on the skylon tower today aug 28th 2008,and we got stuck. we were stuck under the revovling dinning room. we were stuck for over 90 mins. there was 11 people in my elevator and more in others. they said they hasnt happend in 5 years. but I am curious how often it truly happeneds and why we couldnt call the police.

HAHA… Does it happen all the time… Well yes and no, as being a former employee of the tower, I know that problems happen with the elevators at least once a week. I know that when i worked there, a few times an elevator would beak down with guests in it. For those times it wasn’t for 90 mins, but people would get suck, the place is ageing and otis elevators is there alot repairing the 3 elevators. For a quick fact #2 is most troublesome. Even I got stuck in one, only for 5 mins then the thing lowered itself to the ground. But I can say one thing that no one has ever been hurt or injured because of these 3 yellow bugs (except for getting those little fingers caught in the door).

Wanted to read the rest of this story, but it doesn’t seem to be linking and I can’t seem to find any other news stories about it…. I hope we never get stuck in there! But if we do, I hope it is on the falls side :)

BensonsMom, this is a story from a year ago, so I guess the Buffalo News doesn’t keep their stories up that long. Caitlin was leaving a comment on this old posting.

oh… oops. LOL… Now it makes perfect sense! My days are mixed up lately… (plus I work for a newspaper - so I am always at least a day ahead to begin with). Maybe Caitlin works for a paper too! That’s how she got stuck 2 days from now ;-)
Caitlin, what do you mean “…and why we couldn’t call the police”? Did someone tell you NOT to?

Still seems odd that I couldn’t find any other info about the elevators failing - ever. If it really happens a lot, it would be nice to know. And if someone is telling people that get stuck NOT to tell anyone, it makes it sound like it does happen a lot and they are trying to hide it.
