City convention centre ‘a natural:’ Finance minister

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

A convention centre in Niagara Falls is a “meritorious” idea to boost tourism but shouldn’t leave taxpayers on the hook for unexpected costs, says federal Finance Minister Jim Flaherty.

“We don’t need any white elephants that taxpayers end up having to foot the bill for in the long term,” Flaherty told reporters before a reception in Niagara-on-the-Lake Thursday.

While he wouldn’t predict when federal officials might announce funding for a convention centre, Flaherty sent a strong signal he understands the project’s importance for Niagara.
