From the Niagara Gazette:
With a bird’s eye view of the roaring falls, members of the Niagara Falls Tourism Advisory Board met with a top state park official Monday to discuss future projects and partnerships.
“I truly believe the state of New York understands we can’t just have a situation where tourists come to the park … and then go directly back to their rooms,” Tourism Board Chairman Jerry Genova said. “We need them to come into our city and into our businesses.”

You know what makes me sick? The whole Niagara Falls (and Buffalo, for that matter) is soley focused on “history” and “preservation”.
“Let’s preserve that building. It was a meeting place for some guys from the war of 1812″.
“This building is over 75yrs old. We HAVE to preserve it”.
“This is the way that Frederick Olmsted would have designed it…”
The reason we get nothing done in the USA side of the Falls is because of all this bureaucratic bull-*bleep* from officials, poiticians, and preservationists that put a potential plan on pernament hiatus, and therefore nothing gets done.
Why do tourists never stay on the USA side? Because nothing gets done. I wish I was on the planning board and had some true power, because I would say the hell with Frederick Law Olmsted, and his architectual designs… why not move into the 21st century with modern designs?
The Niagara Falls State Park’s new redesign with the removal of the highwway heading into the park that contained a man-made pond and re-worked walking paths was scrapped because it didn’t fit Frederick Law Olmsted’s original design. SO WHAT?? Why is this piece of history so important? Why can’t the USA side just jump into the 21st century, and create their own unique design for a state-park? Are they that dependant on someone else’s original idea? Do you think tourists are going to care?
Look at Canada’s Victoria Park… beautiful, contemporary, landscaped & cared for every year… yet it doesn’t hold that kind of history from any past architect… it’s just done the right way agreed by a bunch of people who thought it would look nice, and they keep adding to it, improving on what one would think was already a beautiful park.
If something gets uprooted, or there’s a plan for something that’s even the slightest bit drastic, you’ll have preservationists screaming down the politican’s throats until the plan is scrapped… therefore stopping any progress for development on the USA’s side.
Sad, just sad. I really want to get on-board and see if I could make a difference… just a normal average-joe with a brain of common sense, and an eye of judgement.
I’ll have to visit Niagara Falls on both sides to really see what your talking about.
