Cadillac Motel for sale?

This is old news, but I finally took a picture of it recently. The Cadillac Motel on Ferry Street looks like it’s been closed for a while now. There has been a forsale sign on one part of the building for a year or so.

It’s a crummy place for a motel, but a restaurant or retail shop might do ok.

Chris used their sign for one if his Photos of the Day in late April of last year.

Star Dragon Restaurant closed temporarily

The Star Dragon Restaurant on Ferry Street (or is it still Victoria Avenue at that point?) is closed until February 7. The blinds are closed, so I don’t know if its closed because business is slow in the winter, or if they are doing renovations.

This is the restaurant that used to be Brandino’s Italian Ristorante & Cafe. It opened last year as Star Dragon Restaurant.

Tim Hortons / New Retail Building progress

HOCO has made some great progress on the new Tim Hortons / Retail building that they are constructing on Clifton Hill. Getting the site ready to start the new building took a while, but the building itself seems to be coming along quickly.

Crowne Plaza Hotel Niagara Falls abandoned?

In a comment on my previous post, Scott said the following:

I think that Intercontinental Hotels Group has finally abandonded their plans for a Crowne Plaza Hotel in Niagara Falls Canada, as it was recently announced that the Days Inn in Niagara Falls USA will be converted into a luxurious Crowne Plaza Hotel. I belive that simply Intercontinental and Crowne Plaza gave up on the Rudan Holding project and decided against a new build and would rather construct a hotel beside the hottest Casino (Seneca) in the Falls area right now. This leaves me with doubts that this hotel will ever be constructed due to the fact that their are much better parcels of land to build hotels on in the Niagara Falls area (Clifton Hill, Skylon Tower, and the Hoco Escarpment). So unfortunately like the Bay-Adelaide Centre in downtown Toronto I think folks from Niagara Falls will be seeing the half built stump of a hotel for a long time.

Just to clarify, the Buffalo News (the article isn’t available online anymore) reported that it is a Holiday Inn Select on Third Street that is being converted to the Crowne Plaza Hotel. The Niagara Gazette shares a little more:

New York State has also agreed to invest up to $7 million in a $22 million renovation project at the Holiday Inn Select at the corner of Third and Niagara streets in Niagara Falls to upgrade the hotel to a Crowne Plaza.

Whether this has anything to do with the problems at the Niagara Falls, Ontario site, I don’t know. But thanks for the good insights, Scott. Keep ‘em coming!

Water main break at Niagara Falls Aviary

I had heard at the beginning of the month that there was a water main break at the Niagara Falls Aviary and they were expecting to be closed for a week. A commenter on a different post said that they were going to be closed till the Spring. I visited the Niagara Falls Aviary web site and saw the following:

I called them to find out when they’d be open. I was told that the water main break caused damage on the main floor. The cafe needs to be almost entirely rebuilt. Niether the elevevators or escalators are working, so there is no way to get people up to where the birds are. The birds are fine as they are above where the water damage was. The person on the phone told me they hoped to be open by the end of January, but she didn’t sound too convincing.

Crowne Plaza Hotel Niagara Falls?

I had someone emailing the following:

I was just wondering if you had any information on what happened to the construction of the Crowne Plaza Hotel on Dunn & Stanley? If you happen to know anything about what is happening or what happened to the proposed and half built Crowne Plaza Hotel I would love to hear from you.

I’ve posted about this once, but there has been no progress made since then. Does anyone know what happened?

Casino dates dominate Michael Buble’s winter itinerary

From LiveDaily.com:

Jazz/pop singer Michael Buble (tickets | music), whose delivery has drawn comparisons to such legendary vocalists as Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, has scheduled early-2006 appearances at a handful of North American casinos, among other gigs.

The Canadian crooner is currently scheduled to play a pair of dates at a Niagara Falls casino, three gigs at the Las Vegas Hilton (his first-ever shows in that city) and a single show at Connecticut’s expansive Mohegan Sun casino. Theater gigs in Atlanta and Richmond, VA, round out his current schedule.

You can find out more about the Fallsview Casino concert on their web site. However if you were planning on getting tickets, you’re out of luck. They’re already sold out!
