Keeping Falls visits flowing in winter

From the Buffalo News:

Planners on both sides of the river get serious about making Niagara Falls a year-round attraction.

Hotel occupancy around Niagara Falls sizzles at more than 90 percent during the summer months, but after winter arrives, you would be hard pressed to find more than a handful of tourists.

Even the amount of water flowing over the falls is cut in half, to produce more electrical power and slow the erosion of the falls.

But the dark days of winter - which offer one highlight: the ice bridge in the gorge - may be ending. Tourism planners on both sides of the world-famous tourist destination are getting serious about making Niagara Falls a year-round attraction.

Greg Frewin and Santa Claus

The Pen Centre in St. Catharines (a huge shopping mall) puts out a newsletter called the PenLetter that they place around the mall. The January 2006 issue highlights Greg Frewin’s appearance with Santa Claus:

The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

The magic of the season was never more evident than at the Pen Centre on Saturday, November 19th. Santa miraculously appeared at Santaland in Sears Court, thanks to the fantastic magic of Greg Frewin. Greg Frewin, know as “The International Grand Champion of Magic”, put on one of his amazing displays of magic as Santa arrived directly from the North Pole. The show dazzled visitors of all ages. To help celebrate the season, the Pen Centre gave away six family show passes to the Greg Frewin Dinner Theatre plus a grand prize of a family pass to the theatre plus two nights deluxe accomodation along with two free breakfasts at the beautiful Clarion President Hotel and Suites by the Falls. And because Christmas is a time of giving, visitors could purchase admissions to the Greg Frewin Theatre in Niagara Falls and they donated a percentage to the St. Catharines Hospital Foundation. Santa’s arrival officially kicked off the festive season at the Pen Centre. Marketing Director Rick Woodward said “This event has become a Niagara tradition. The Pen Centre is always thrilled to usher in the holiday season with a special event in which the entire community can participate.”

Tourism sector bracing for border plan

From Niagara This Week:

The good news is, the area’s growing convention business should escape unscathed if legislation requiring passports to cross U.S.-Canada borders is handed down by the U.S., says one of the city’s tourism industry directors. The bad news is, the area’s massive tourism sector could take a huge hit.
