Quality Inn Clifton Hill closing (Clifton Hill Resorts Update - September 25, 2008)

On Tuesday I received the latest issue of the Clifton Hill Resorts Update newsletter. They have finally announced officially that the Quality Inn Clifton Hill is closing as of October 13. The same information was then posted on the Clifton Hill blog. Here is how it appeared in the newsletter:

First off, that’s a great looking sign! Who knew they had 4 pools?! As for memories, I never personally stayed at the Quality Inn, but I know of and have heard from many people who have stayed there, and loved it. It certainly wasn’t the fanciest hotel around, but it was clean, had a nice indoor and a beautiful outdoor pool, and had an excellent price.

One thing I did think was interesting about the announcement was that there was nothing mentioned about what will be happening with the space/land other than it is being torn down “to make way for new developments”. What are those new developments? It will be interesting to see what comes next.

I did a quick search on the Internet for information about the Fallsway Motor Hotel, and I actually came across a couple of auctions (one of them was Italian) where they are selling an old brochure from 35-40 years ago. There were also auctions for “swizzle sticks” and even an ashtray. I also came across a site for an Elvis tribute artist who performed there.

Fee free to leave a comment about your memories of the Fallsway Motor Hotel, the Quality Inn Fallsway, or the Quality Inn Clifton Hill.

    SNIFF!!!
I stayed at that hotel at least once a year going back to about 1982. The Comfort Inn was called the Park something. We truely enjoyed staying there especially with the Golden Griddle. We would always stay Room 711. It was the corner room way in the back. The one thing you knew you would see there were the raccoons at night. We would make a mad dash to try to get to your room before they got to you LOL. Room 711 had a semi view of the falls through the trees and of course you could see the racoons sleeping in the trees. I have pictures of both of those. I thought that The Clifton Hill sort of reminded me of those budget type hotels in Disney. It was colorful that is for sure. We have stayed at several other hotels but something about the Quality kept us coming back. The room was very nice size and the cleaning staff was very friendly. I guess the only hotel left is the comfort inn on Clifton Hill. I really will miss the hotel.

I guess it is good is closing. One of the most embarssing moments happen at this hotel which lead me to never going back to that hotel or any of HOCO properties.

To me it smelled like any old choice hotel property. It had that strong smell of vinager/cleaning supples.

It was a nice place, but I’m excited to see what is next for the property. Isn’t it crazy how quick things change in the area?

What is the plan for it? Anyone heard anything? Rumours?

The Skywheel was supposed to be the first part of an amusement park and hotel complex stretching back to the Skylon. Hoco also did some investigation into building a Titanic replica and exibit on their property. Graham posted about both of these previously: http://accessniagara.com/blog/?s=hoco+amusement

wasn’t the last thing we heard on this..is that HOCO was waiting to see what was gonna happen with the US economy?…and like drafty said..the start of the big park….the hotel was slated to be torn down last nov for the park…but when the dollar dropped…HOCO was holding off….?

I think they were holding off because they wanted to see what happened with the border regulations, now that passports are going to be required in June of 2009 I can see them scrapping the plan. The economy also probably has a factor in it, and we all know how that is going. They will lose all that walk over business they would get from the American side.

I have stayed at the Quality Inn Clifton Hill every year since 1992. It has always been the best place to stay. I was devestated when they tore down the old Golden Griddle to put up a stupid SkyWheel. They took down the falls view tower ride for a stupid ferris wheel! How stupid! Golden Griddle was awesome, great food. I personally remember the lobby, the snack bar, the chairs, the brochure stand, the good service, the good food, and the good view of Dazzleland/Great Canadian Midway. Does anyone remember Q-ball’s bar across from the lobby bathrooms. They had a fun bubble hockey game I used to play. Three years ago when I was talking to a hotel worker next to the indoor pool entrance, I heard about the sky-rise hotel coming up. I was shcoked and shaken up. I also heard that year from a Boston Pizza waitress what the plans were for it as well. I thought they were taking it down after the summer of 2007. I do know what the future develeopments are. They are supposed to be building some sort of amusement park with rollar coasters. Sounds kinda weird, doesn’t it. But that is what the developments are. Post comments about your past stays at the Quality Inn Clifton Hill.

I’ve been to Niagara Falls every year of my life except for the year I was born (1970) and the year my wife and I married (2006). I’ve stayed at the Quality Inn several times. Usually we would stay at the Comfort Inn next door. Does anyone remember what that used to be called before Comfort Inn? Was it Ventura Inn? Growing up, when we did stay at the Quality Inn, and had both gramma’s with us, we would get the corner family suite. It was always a nice place to stay. In 2005 my then fiance and I stayed at the Quality Inn. We got a back room with the balcony looking over the wooded hill going towards the back. We had a raccoon spend the night on the balcony.

It’s kind of sad to see that the Quality Inn will be no more. I know progress must continue but the Fallsview Tower Ride is gone, Golden Griddle is gone, Quality Inn will be gone. It just doesn’t seem like the same Niagara Falls I fell in love with. Heck, I’m still trying to get over the loss of the Waltzing Waters!!
