The Niagara Falls Review has another article about Earth Hour. After several introductory paragraphs, they get into more details about local businesses:
So far, 18 businesses including Niagara Fallsview Casino, the Niagara Parks Commission and big hotels like the Brock Plaza, Hilton, Embassy Suites are on board, the city’s website says.
The Embassy Suites hotel was the first to join in.
“We are basically celebrating this day as the rest of Canada, the U.S. and the world is doing,” said Ralph Sabourin, the hotel’s general manager.
“What we’re going to do is dim our lights between eight and nine in the evening, a little bit in the lobby and the exterior of the building.”
Staff will inform guests about Earth Hour and encourage them to conserve energy in their rooms, Sabourin said.
Apparently the Fallsview Casino will NOT have their big red letters lit up. The article also has a list of businesses that are participating. I wonder if there will be any backlash/resentment towards companies that aren’t participating.
I see this as a waste of time. A hotel can’t just turn there life off because that could endanger guest. I was at a hotel that had all there lights off and you couldn’t see anything down the hall. Canada is not going to make a difference with all this environmental stuff. Countries like the US, China and India can make the difference.
How is it a waste of time?
They’re not turning OFF their lights, they’re dimming them. Maybe every-other light if there’s no dimmer… the only things turned off would be the unnecessary flashy lights, but the necessary ones would still be on, albeit… a little dimmer.
i don’t think its a waste of time, but i agree with smoke when he says “Countries like the US, China and India can make the difference”, because, 3 of the most highly populated countries in the world use the most energy.
then again, this hour is a good way to start it, eh?
Saving energy is a bunch of bunk. The cold hard fact is that only a small minority of the WORLD’s population cares enough to change the way they live because of it. Sure, some lights will be dim or off for a small period of time on one day, but the rest of the time during the year they will be on full blast? So what is accomplished?
some conservation, but not enough.
