Pictures and video from the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights

All of the snow that we’ve had recently has me singing “It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas” to my sons. They laugh, and say, “No Daddy… It’s not Christmas, It’s Easter.” Anyway, all of this snow and talk of Christmas reminded me that I had taken some pictures of the Winter Festival of Lights this year. As is always the case, you can see some of the thumbnails below, and view all of the thumbnails and larger pictures in the Winter Festival of Lights in Winter 2007/2008 gallery.

I also posted a video of the Niagara Falls Winter Festival of Lights. The video is a little over a minute and half long. it shows the new display at Zimmerman Fountain, and the Disney displays in Queen Victoria Park.

Falls to go dark for Earth Hour

From Niagara This Week:

The last time there was nary a light on glorious Niagara Falls was probably during the Northeast blackout in the summer of 2003.

Usually bathed in colourful light, later this month the falls will be shrouded in darkness again, this time intentionally along with most of the city, to help encourage energy conservation.

“How do you save the planet? One light at a time,” said Coun. Jim Diodati, who is challenging residents in the city and across the region to join in Earth Hour, a global movement turning out the lights for one hour March 29.

“It’s such a great idea and it’s not going to cost anyone anything. In fact its going to save money (on the hydro bills).”

Centre snags its first event

From the Niagara Falls Review:

There will be more mayors in Niagara Falls than you can bang a gavel at in 2014, when the city hosts the Federation of Canadian Municipalities annual conference.

It’s the first major convention to book its event for the Niagara Convention and Civic Centre, the $100-million facility to be built on Stanley Avenue near Dunn Street.

The organization announced Tuesday Niagara Falls had been selected to host its conference in 2014, Mayor Ted Salci said.

“It’s excellent news. It’s really going to set Niagara on a new course,” said Salci, who made a presentation to the Federation of Canadian Municipalities board meeting in Brandon, Man. last week, along with Joyce Morocco from Niagara Falls Tourism and Patrick Gedge, head of the Niagara Economic Development Corp.
