Off-site hotel parking presented as green solution

From the Niagara Falls Review:

More off-site parking will mean less of an impact on the Niagara escarpment, say developers of a five-star hotel that will be built into the moraine near Robinson Street.

City council gave Canadian Niagara Hotels permission to provide 71.5 per cent of the parking for its planned Westin hotel in a lot between Stanley and Allendale avenues instead of in a lot immediately attached to the hotel. It means 235 spaces will be three blocks from the hotel while 94 will be in an underground lot on the premises.

The company, which also owns the Brock Plaza and Sheraton-on-the-Falls hotels, plans to build the $130-million Westin Fallsview at the east end of Robinson Street at the top of the moraine, between the Skylon Tower and Jolley Cut path.

I can’t believe that this got approved. All the parking, both on and off site, will be tandem parking, which means that cars will be parked up to 4 deep, so that if the first car in is required, the 3 behind it have to be moved first, which, I’m sure, will mean constantly idling cars. Of course this means that it will be 100% valet parking and wait times to get your car will be horrendous. And they’re calling it a green solution because they won’t have to dig deeper into the moraine to provide on site parking levels? Unbelievable :-(

I’m very happy to see the hotel be built purely for the jobs and the fact that a 5star hotel is something the Falls has needed for a while now but I am very disappointed with the parking situation.

I think all the major hotels need to get together and build one massive shared super parking structure outside the main tourist areas preferably across from Marienland and use a combination of valet service, dedicated taxi’s & busses to transport guests and the elusive monorail that is yet to be built and is sorely needed!
