Best bet: Get a passport

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The U.S. ambassador to Canada is telling Canadians not to take any chances at land border crossings and to get their passports ready.

“What I tell Canadians is the same thing I tell Americans, is, with all due respect, get a passport - that is the sure thing,” David Wilkins said Monday.

The U.S. ambassador said there are a lot “mixed messages,” but he pointed out that a passport law has been passed and is in place.

“It requires passports for air travel now and it will require passports for land travel, something between January ‘08 and June of ‘09,” Wilkins said.

Still upset about this passport thing. Yes I will probably get one soon but, perfect example. The Guy who is in Denver right now with TB was able to leave his honeymoon in Italy and I am not sure the correct route but cross the border from NY to Canada. Both his and his wife’s passport had a security medical alert under no circumstances allow into the country. The border guard felt they both looked healthy and let them in. Perfect example the passport policy does not work. He would of gotten in without the passport as well but the passport was suppose to set of a alert and did not. Again why is the US doing this to prevent what at least it did not prevent anything this time

What about those of us who never traveled outside of the US, and never had a passport? Me, my mom, her friend, and brother went to Canada, Kingston/Toronto/Niagara last July and we had a great time. For us, it was straight up the PA turnpike and I-81 then the 401. We’re from Allentown, PA. We threw everything we had (birth cert. driver’s license/state photo ID, social security cards) at the immigration officer at 1000 Islands at 11 PM, and they made us go in the building and get checked some more. They let us in. Welcome to Ontario. We did the 1000 Islands boat out of Kingston. We visited Centreville Amusement Park while in Toronto, we stayed at the Westin Harbour Castle. I finally got to do the haunted houses at Clifton Hill. I can’t believe how scary they were. Castle Dracula, Frankenstein, Haunted House, Nightmares, Screamers. Going back into the States was a snap. All the officer said at the Rainbow Bridge was “Citizenships?” and my mom handed over some of the ID like licenses/ID’s and social cards and he let us pass. It was my very first time outside of the US. Now, if I ever want to go back to Canada we will need to apply for new border crossing passport cards in lieu of passports to be able to cross over. Is it true that if you go up without passports and you try to enter Canada they won’t let you in next year even if you have all your other ID? What happens to people who manage to make it in to Canada without a passport but are denied re-entry to the US? What do you do then? What about if you go up and stay on the NY side at the falls but you want to go to Clifton Hill and you don’t have a passport? Don’t they have a waiver or pass that they can issue you for so many hours if you walk across?
