Celebrate the Howl-I-Days at Great Wolf Lodge Niagara Falls Canada

On Friday I received the latest newsletter from the Great Wolf Lodge in Niagara Falls. They are promoting a Thanksgiving package, a Winter package, and a New Year’s Eve package.

Tourist numbers still falling

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Affordable meals and accommodation and aggressive advertising in the rubber-tire market are what’s needed to stem the tide of Canadians flooding across the river on holiday while Americans spend their vacation dollars at home.

That’s the opinion of one hospitality industry insider, Silvio Garofalo, manager of the Beef Baron on Centre Street.

“Niagara Falls needs to, I feel, start looking in their own backyards before they start marketing outside the area,” said Garofalo.

Christmas Lights Display in Niagara Falls, Canada

From Associated Content:

Niagara Falls, with all its beauty and wonder, is even more awesome during the holiday season, when the holiday lights display illuminates the Mighty Niagara. In earlier years, visitors could visit both sides of the border for out-of-this-world lights displays, but the American side of the Falls has discontinued the former Festival of Lights. The brightest holiday lights in Niagara Falls, New York, can be seen on the brightly lit Seneca Niagara Casino. The Canadian Niagara Falls has much more to offer for holiday touring.

The fantastic Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls, Canada, is simply amazing. This year’s theme is, “Lights, Nights, and Wonders.” The light festival includes two million lights along the Niagara Parkway, which runs adjacent to the Falls. There are over 100 displays to view in the Niagara Parks Winter Wonderland.

The future of AccessNiagara

Wow! I can’t believe the number of comments that have been left on the posting about the fight at the Firefly. As of this posting there are 42! I appreciate your contributions, and also appreciate the kinds words with regards to the work I’ve put into the site. I figured now was as good a time as any to update you on some of the plans I have for the AccessNiagara.com site.

I had originally planned on AccessNiagara to be a destination site similar to InfoNiagara. Unfortunately I just don’t have the time to do that. So I think I’m going to turn it into a “wiki” of all things Niagara Falls. Similar to Wikipedia, visitors will be able to add content for attractions, hotels, restaurants and more, both past and preset. I had thought of getting a separate domain name, but rather than do that, I figured I’d keep everything consolidated on one site.

I also should have a forum ready to launch soon. Some of you have noticed that I already have something setup that you can get to from the blog. Registration info is shared with the blog, so once you are registered on one, you are registered on the other. There is still a forum system that I want to try, so don’t get too attached to the “test” one. One question… would you prefer one like I have now that is essentially part of the blog, or would you prefer a separate forum system?
Ultimately, I see the site as being driven by the visitors. You can contribute by posting comments on the blog (/blog), write up things on the wiki (/wiki or /? (any suggestions), talk with the community on the forum (/forum) and/or even post your own pictures (/gallery) (did you know you can do that?).

I plan on working on this over the winter and hopefully by the end of March I can have a complete site ready to go for the new tourist season. Please leave your suggestions and comments.

Ellen Avenue Boutique Hotel progress

I’ve posted recently about the construction happening beside the Greg Frewin Theatre. The former dairy location is going to be a boutique hotel. It really seemed to be at a stand-still until recently. They now seem to be making good progress.

WHAT’S YOUR PROBLEM? Whirlpool Bridge sign

From the Niagara Gazette:

A Canadian rock radio station and out-of-service information hotlines probably weren’t what local tourism officials wanted to use to greet visitors crossing the Whirlpool Bridge into the Falls.

But that’s just what appeared on a tourist information sign that hung on Whirlpool Street until Wednesday afternoon.

Motel 6 Progress (3rd floor)

Another floor is going up at the new Motel 6:

Floral Showhouse: Parkway’s hidden gem

From the Niagara Falls Review:

A cold wind blows across the Niagara Parks Commission grounds near the old Toronto Powerhouse property. The flower beds have been culled for the season. A garden near the parking lot holds the remnants of hostas, lying limp and faded in the November air.

It looks and feels like winter.

But inside, the Niagara Parks Commission’s Floral Showhouse is awash with colour.

The temperature hovers at a balmy 21 C, and visitors quickly unbutton their coats as they pass through the doors…

The Floral Showhouse might be the busiest place in the Niagara Parks Commission, but the parking lot is nearly empty. It is, in many ways, a hidden gem - a place visitors stumble upon when they’re looking for something else.

‘Curious’ bird lands at city aviary

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Vivian has flown the coop and landed in Niagara Falls. The 211/42-foot tall Victoria crowned pigeon is the latest addition to Bird Kingdom Niagara Falls.

Vivian is on a short-term loan from the Toronto Zoo, and will live at the Niagara Falls aviary until she is assigned a new home in the United States.

Crowned pigeons are the largest pigeon species in the world and one of the most stunning.

Deep grey-blue in color, Vivian has red eyes and a unique spiky plumage sprouting from the top of her head.

Oakes removing Falls Tower

From the Niagara Falls Review:

After about 40 years of providing a panoramic view of everything Niagara Falls has to offer, the Falls Tower Ride - previously known as the Spiral Tower - will be permanently coming down this week.

The removal of the tourist attraction is a part of Harry Oakes’ redevelopment plan. Oakes, president of HOCO Entertainment and Resorts, owns attractions along the south side of Clifton Hill…

“The tower (which was built in the mid-1960s) can hold 16 people. The Skywheel can carry 240 people,” said Oakes.
