Crowne Plaza conversion complete in Falls

From Yahoo! Finance:

The $20 million conversion of the former Holiday Inn Select into a Crowne Plaza Hotel is complete for the downtown Niagara Falls property.

The Crowne Plaza nameplate officially goes on the 397-room, Third Street hotel Tuesday morning. The conversion began last year shortly after Phoenix-based Namwest LLC acquired the hotel. The hotel is third largest in the immediate Buffalo Niagara area.

I posted about this when I first heard that it was going to be renovated. That led to discussions about the Crowne Plaza in Niagara Falls, ON.  The conversion is complete in Niagara Falls, NY, and the one in Ontario still sits as it was a couple of years ago. It’s such an eyesore!

Photographers focus on Niagara Escarpment

From the Dundas Star News:

A summer morning fishing on the shores of Owen Sound Bay. Scaling the escarpment at Tiffany Falls with the aid of spiked boots and ice axes. The Toronto skyline visible 50 kilometres away from the vast rolling countryside of Caledon Hills.

The Niagara Escarpment means many things to many people. For photographers Sandy Bell from Hamilton, Vic MacBournie from Ancaster and John MacRae from Dundas, the appeal is in the details. A fern that has found a foothold in a crack in the limestone wall. A fawn following confidently alongside its mother, stopping only briefly to glance over at the photographer who is focused on the pair as they disappear into the forest edges.

Mr. Bell, Mr. MacBournie and Mr. MacRae — who make up the Spirit of Nature photography group — showcase their remarkable photographers’ eyes in a new book released this fall by James Lorimer and Company Ltd.

In October 2002, the Cares Foundation made a five-year commitment to the NCF to create a permanent legacy fund to serve the community. Another $100,000 was added the pledge when the Fallsview Casino and Resort opened in 2004.

City historian turns to local waters for subject matter of latest book

From the Niagara Falls Review:

While he normally focuses on Niagara Falls, city historian and author Sherman Zavitz plunged into deeper waters this time around for his sixth book.

“The Niagara River - The Ontario Shore” will be released today and features a photographic history of the river from Fort Erie to Niagara-on-the-Lake.

Filled with more than 170 photographs and engravings, the book traces the history of the river from the late 1800s to the early 1900s.

“It’s a pretty good representation on how things used to be. It shows different aspects of life along the river,” Zavitz said.

Frewin theatre hosts show for needy

From the Niagara Falls Review:

About 150 clients of Project Share will have a special holiday treat Tuesday, when they are invited to a show at the Greg Frewin Theatre. “I have gone through my share of challenges getting this theatre started and I see families going through their own challenges in their lives. It is the generosity that I experienced that made the difference in my life, and I can only hope that this evening will be one of those moments for these families,” Frewin said.
