Setup up for the Winter Festival of Lights

The Winter Festival of Lights starts Saturday, November 4, 2006 and continues until Monday, January 8, 2007. As I’ve been out and around lately, I’ve noticed crews out setting up the various displays.

Little Caesars is open

I’m not sure when it opened (at least a week ago), but Little Caesars on Victoria Avenue is now open:

No room at the inns thanks to Sleep Cheap; Some hotels sold out

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Niagara residents were quick off the mark to take advantage of the Sleep Cheap, Charities Reap promotion, which began Thursday.

About 20 hotels have teamed up with local charities, setting aside rooms for rent to residents from Nov. 27 to 30 for as little as $25. People didn’t wait long to make reservations.

“The phones have been ringing off the hook,” said Claudio Agnoletto, general manager of Michael’s Inn By The Falls, one of the participating properties.

This is the second year for the promotion, and Michael’s Inn has participated both years.

Agnoletto said the promotion is a great way for residents to get away without leaving the city. The fact the money raised goes to charity is even better, he said.

“It’s a great promotion for everyone, especially the charities.”

Skylon Tower work

There is some work going on at the Skylon Tower. I don’t know what it’s for (maybe because of the fire?)…

Niagara SkyWheel work

The other day there was a crane at the Niagara SkyWheel taking the centre hub off the wheel. The wheel is still operational. I wonder what they’re doing…

Waterparks to sleep cheap

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The three waterparks in Niagara Falls are expected to be popular draws in this year’s Sleep Cheap, Charities Reap promotion that gives deeply discounted hotel rooms to Niagara residents.

About 20 hotels in Niagara Falls and a group of charities are teaming up again to raise money for charities by renting rooms for as little as $25. The event started last year as a way for the tourism industry to give back to the community. It will run Nov. 27 to 30. Reservations should be made directly with hotels, which will require proof of residency to get the discounted rate.

It also allows hotel companies to show off their properties to Niagara residents who wouldn’t otherwise visit a hotel in their hometown.

Actor says goodbye eh?; Performer, show partner sells share of city’s premiere entertainment attractions

From the Niagara Falls Review:

There’s plenty Jim Cooper will miss about Oh Canada Eh?, the patriotic dinner show he co-founded 12 years ago.

The songs won’t be one of them.

“When you’ve sang the same songs about 1,700 or 1,800 times, it might be nice to put some of them to bed,” he says with a laugh. “And the strange thing is, they’ll probably go completely out of my head within a couple of weeks.”

He’ll find out soon enough. Tonight, Cooper takes the stage for the final time, walking away from one of the most successful entertainment ventures in the city’s history.

Captain sailing into retirement

From the Niagara News:

After 32 years behind the helm of Maid of the Mist steamboats, Richard Schuyler is sailing into the sunset.

Schuyler, who has steered a boat through the mist of the Falls since 1974 is retiring.

The Niagara Falls native, and captain, departed on his farewell trip on Tuesday October 24 at 4:37- the last boat to head towards the Falls for the 2006 season.

For 32 years, Schuyler would start his day at the Maid of the Mist at 9 a.m. putting in an 11-and-a-half-hour shift, running 22 trips to the Falls during the peak times of summer.

Over the Falls in a Barrel

From American Heritage:

A hundred and five years ago today, Annie Taylor became the first person to go over Niagara Falls in a barrel. She was 63 years old, a widow, and a failed dancing school teacher—an unlikely candidate for such an exploit. But she survived, and her name goes down in history as not only the first survivor but the only woman ever to try barreling over the falls alone.

This is a great article that has some interesting history on Annie Taylor. You should definitely check it out!
