Holer offers Terrors of the Sea; Marineland begins construction of shark aquarium

From the Niagara Falls Review:

A massive mechanical shovel scoops dirt from beside a riverbank and loads several dump trucks.

“This is going to be 60 acres, the world’s largest aquarium,” said Marineland owner and founder John Holer.

Casually dressed in a baseball cap and golf shirt, he points to the heavy equipment and explains the construction crew began preparing the ground for a shark exhibit last week.

The Terrors of the Sea shark aquarium is set to open in two years. It will be the first of a four-part marine complex that will include an interactive dolphin habitat, an ocean reef with exotic species of marine life and a rainforest lagoon that will feature fresh water fish from around the world.

  • i understood ripley’s aquarium beside great wolf lodge was supposed to be the biggest..when i was there a month ago..still no construction had started..still just signage

  • Ripley’s has put the aquarium on hold until the implications of the passport law are clear. Even then, I’m guessing the Marineland location will be larger as there is a lot more space there.

  • So how many years do you think this aquarium will take?? 30, 40?? lol.

  • No doubt… They announced this around the year 2000, and little has been done since then. The first real phase of this project (Aside from Friendship Cove) was to have been done by 2004, with a completion by 2006 for everything, including the entire indoor aquarium.

Why progress is so slow, I don’t know… but I think the owner should seriously consider hiring outside contractors who can complete the project on a much quicker time-table.

Rides seem to take at least a year to complete, and attractions take even longer. That’s not the way it normally works in the amusement industry… and definately is not the norm around Niagara Falls, Ont where progress moves at blazing speeds.

  • Here is a similar article from Niagara This Week. However in this article, it states the Topple Tower will bring the ride collection to 21. I just checked on the Marineland website that the number should only be 16. IMO that’s quite a large difference when you only have a few rides.

  • I agree with the 16 number. The map they hand out when you go to Marineland shows 15 currently open plus Topple Tower. The 16 are:
    Sky Screamer
    Dragon Mountain
    Magic Experience
    Kandu’s Twister
    Sky Hawk
    Wave Swinger
    Flying Dragon
    Hurricane Cove
    Topple Tower
    Tivoli Wheel
    Lady Bug Coaster
    Space Avenger
    Boat Carousel
    Orca Screamer
    Bumbe Bee
    Viking Adventure

  • Graham… did you ride either the Bumble Bee or Viking Adventure? Are any of those new rides good enough for adults-only, or are they really just a kids-only type of ride?

Although the park has focused on marine life for the past forever years, the article from the Buffalo News stated that they were planning on four major rides, with the Sky Screamer being one of them, and I think the Topple Tower (that better not be the final name) being the other. Does anyone know what the other two would be? It certainly seems about time the park invests in another rollercoaster, considering that would be a huuuuuuge draw, especially considering the marketing they do and how far the marketing extends (I think they market to places as far as Syracuse!).

I honestly wonder how much Marineland spends per year on marketing with those commercials. It seems as though they have a bottomless pit of money in their marketing department!

  • No one in our group went on either Bumble Bee or Viking Adventure. They are located in the “family rides” section, and were both very popular. I did see lots of adults going on with their kids.

  • Rob I have never seen an amusement park advertise as much as Marineland (maybe Disney). I swear Marineland probably does more marketing than Wonderland, Darien Lake, and Martin’s combined.

I remember a few years ago reading in an article that Marineland had plans to build another rollercoaster, but Marineland seems really odd when it comes to planning and building.

I think a mine train coaster would be a great addition because of the landscaping and the theming options.

  • i remember back probably in april when they were just putting up the supports for the skywheel..i came across an artist’s conception of the HOCO skywheel *park* when it was all done..it showed many rides..including a roller coaster..that is to be built right back to the skylon..actually..it also said that the comfort inn is comming done and a hotel skyscraper going up ..i haven’t found anything else about it since..but usually when HOCO has an idea..it’s done.
