Toughest two minutes in sports comes to town

It’s known as the toughest two minutes in sports and for the next four days it will be showcased right in front of the falls.

The 2006 Firefit Canadian Championships is set to begin at the Niagara Parks Commission’s Table Rock parking lot tomorrow. More than 500 professional firefighters from across the country will ply their trade in a race against the clock and each other in competition for national bragging rights and a chance to get into the 2006 World Championships in Henderson, Nevada.

Kite festival near Niagara Falls

The world’s largest kite will be flown at the Niagara International Kite Festival, to be held in Niagara Falls Oct. 6-9.

The kite measures 83 by 131 feet, and will be flown by a team led by Masaaki Modegi, president of the Japan Kite Association, in Reservoir State Park in Lewiston, on Saturday and Sunday of Columbus Day weekend.

Prospect Park in Niagara Falls State Park will host a re-enactment of an 1848 kite contest on the Friday and Monday of Columbus Day weekend, along with an attempt to connect the U.S. and Canada with an arch of kites.

Passport law could strain border ties

Mayor Ted Salci was beaming with pride as he sat in his office and rattled off a list of recent tourism success stories in this city.

Two booming casinos. Twelve major hotels built since 1996, with four more in the planning stages. Two spectacular golf courses, with another on the way. A $130 million water park and hotel that opened in April.

But the mayor’s smile became a grimace at the mention of one word: passports.
