Tourism nightmare

    From Niagara This Week:

The local tourism industry must step up its marketing to ensure its neighbours south of the border continue to view Niagara Falls as a world-class destination, despite the Canadian dollar setting new 28-year highs, says Anna Pierce, manager of Niagara Falls Tourism.

“When SARS hit, the tourism industry called it the Perfect Storm,” said Pierce.

“If that movie had a sequel, the current situation with the Canadian dollar would be the plot.”

Pierce said news the Canadian dollar cracked 90 cents U.S. Tuesday morning, is one of the “worst things” to happen to a cross-border city like Niagara Falls.

“It seems we are getting lambasted with one thing after another. We have to get right to the U.S. tourist and show them, more than ever, that Niagara Falls is a city worth coming to.”
