20 floors and counting at the Hilton

Drafty made a comment that the newspaper said the Hilton was at 20 floors, but it didn’t look like it. I think they may be counting by height, not by the number of actual levels. For instance, there are a few floors that look like they are double the normal height. If you could each of those as two floors, then they are at about 20 floors.

At least not all of us believe that this type of development is good for the environment, the atmosphere and lifestyle of Niagara Falls or Canada’s image. In the long-term, a “green” Niagara Falls, Ontario is probably what’s best for the region, not a “sell-out” to U.S. corporate interests and the corruption that they can bring. I’ve discovered a new organization, http://www.closefallsviewcasino.org that appears to be dedicated to bringing these issues to light.

  3. 3 niagara

Sorry to tell you, people have been fighting that fight longer than any of us have been alive, and that aint happening.

  4. 4 Falls Lover

I hear what you’re saying Niagara, but Fallsview Casino is unlike any hotel or tourist attraction in the region. Because it’s government owned, the public will always be involved in the disposition of the Casino. And therefore, it’s possible that the Casino could become a political liability, especially if it isn’t making anywhere near the money that was promised. Keep in mind that Fallsview (unlike hotels in the area) must do an enormous amount of GAMBLING business each week just to break even. Even if Fallsview has 100% occupancy in its hotel 365 days a year, the hotel related revenue would cover only a portion of the Casino’s baseline operating costs. Furthermore, a significant portion of the Casino’s business is now comprised of “special package deals” where patrons pay a greatly reduced rate for their stay. Of course, the Casino hopes that these patrons will gamble plenty to offset the reduced lodging rate. As it has turned out, more and more of those who stay at Fallsview (via cheap package deals) are spending less on gambling.

Falls Lover, if you have anything to do with that website, could you please change the word “providence” to “province”. I caught the typo a couple of times over that website.

  6. 6 drafty

Interesting how this organisation that can’t spell from East Freedom, PA is more concerned about a casino in Canada that, according to them, is apparently built on top of the Falls :), than the similar casino across the border. Not to mention the pollution spewing factories and the urban decay nearby.
I also wonder about their ‘facts’. The site claims that Niagara Falls is one of only 15 natural wonders in the world, and yet, in this mornings paper, I read that a Swiss group, New7Wonders, is conducting a worldwide poll to determine the New Seven Wonders of Nature, and that Niagara Falls is currently running 11th out of a list of 77 and will probably not even make the list of 21 finalists.
It just seems very suspicious to me why this ‘organization’ would single out one establishment out of the dozens of similar places on both sides of the border. Maybe they just have a beef with the providence :)

  7. 7 niagara

Ahh jeez, I KNEW someone was going to say something about that lol. I was trying to be as nice and civil as possible.

  8. 8 drafty

Also funny how Falls Lover ‘discovered the site’ but has the same province/providence error in the posting.

Interesting comments drafty, but most of them are not very objective. For example, the casino on the US side of the border is located in a run-down neighborhood and is quite a distance from the Falls area. In contrast, Fallsview Casino is perched above the Falls on perhaps the most desirable piece of real estate in the area. In fact, Fallsview Casino actively exploits and promotes it’s close proximity to the Falls in its marketing literature and adverts. A US based casino would have to be located on Goat Island, to achieve such a close proximity to the Falls. http://www.closefallsviewcasino.org does NOT claim that Niagara Falls is one of “15 Natural Wonders of the World”, rather it claims that there are fewer than 15 “GREAT Natural Wonders of the World” with Niagara Falls fitting into this group. Great Natural Wonders are the very well known traditional Natural Wonders. Aside from Great Natural Wonders, there are about 200 lesser Natural Wonders in the World. Most of these lesser Natural Wonders can be found within UNESCO’s “World Heritage List”.

While there is lots of urban decay and old factories on the US side of the border, all of this was constructed long BEFORE there was “green” thinking and a general appreciation for the environment and Natural Wonders. In contrast Fallsview Casino was completed in 2004, long AFTER “green thinking” and environmentalism had come about. Furthermore, you stated that there are “dozens of similar places [to Fallsview Casino] on both sides of the border.” You’ve got to be kidding!!!! There are no places similar to Fallsview Casino on either side of the border. In closing, let me ask you a few questions: Do you really think that Fallsview Casino would be good for North America over the long haul? And in what way? Do actually think that Fallsview will still be around by around 2050? And, do you believe that MORE of the World’s Natural Wonders should have Casinos situated next to them?

I never read so much bull in my life. Is funny how the Ontario and Worldwide concerns are the same.

I think the Casino does a great job at attracting tourist from the U.S and within Canada. . I work at a small hotel in Toronto and everyday I get someone asking how to get to Niagara and where the casino is and etc.

“Fallsview Casino both directly and indirectly produces monumental amounts of greenhouse gases, which contribute to Global Warming.”

    Imagine what Las Vegas does.

“It is WRONG that 19 year olds are allowed to gamble and drink within Fallsview Casino, and, as such, Fallsview and its ilk pose a very real threat to the youth of North America.”

I hate to tell you that kids are gambling in school with games like Texas Poker and kids will drink underage. It has nothing to do with the Casino.

“Fallsview Casino does NOT provide a significant number of satisfying, honorable or morally sound jobs.”

What the differnce between being a greeter at Wally and dealing cards at a Casino. They both pay money. You can’t tell people that there is is not satisfying. I work as a Concierge and I am happy to do it. Your trying to tell me that a Concierge at the Casino is satisfying or honorable.

The casino also bring is money for services that many Canadians enjoy.

Instead of wasting your time on a Canadian issue why not worry about your own country.

  11. 11 Sara

Kids that are way younger than 19 hold private parties for gambling and poker. There are tons of ads here advertising the danger of children who gamble so it must be a big problem. Thats also the law across canada, so there is probably no way to dispute it, I don’t think its wrong at all.

  12. 12 sue

wow…whatta load of crap…some people have nothing better to do than to try and close casinos?…wish i had that kinda free time…does it also mean that all the hotels in that area should also be closed?..or is yur grudge only against casinos?..maybe you should pick on vegas..now THERE’S a challenge for ya…yur thinking FC won’t still be around in 2050?..only 40 years yanno…many in vegas have been there longer than that…and green?…green is a joke…and what about the incline?..i wonder how many squirrels they disrupted when they built it 44 years ago…i’ve stayed in the falls MANY times…funny thing..never seen ANY smoke and pollutiion and crap comin from the canadian side…better start a website to get rid of the old scow too while yur at it..i bet it’s making the *green* water pretty dirty by now..
    :)

  13. 13 Chris

casino, how i would like to go in…lol

  14. 14 drafty

Thanks for the backup folks :) Let’s all wish Falls Lover best of luck with his ‘Fallsview Casino is destroying North America’ campaign.

  15. 15 Chris

ok…i think drafty busted that topic, so…

when do they plan on finishing this project??

  16. 16 Smoke

Does anyone one know why they change the age 10 19 to get shows in the avalon ballroom? I really want to see Jay Leno but I won’t be 19 for another 10 days when the show happens?

  17. 17 Chris

you’ll be 19 in 10 days, or the show is in 10 days, i can’t read it right…

i do not know why they changed it…aren’t the shows harmless?

  18. 18 sue

a friend of mine is works for the avalon (thru ticketmaster)…they serve alcohol there right in the theatre..therefore..over 19 :( happy birthday smoke!!! (incase i ferget later..lol)
    :)

  19. 19 Drafty

I think that’t just a smokescreen (no pun intended) sue. Under 19’s are allowed in restaurants and sporting events where alcohol is served. It just seems that the Casino only wants adults in the Avalon, and this is their out.

  20. 20 Smoke

When the Show happens on July 3 i’ll be 19 in 10 days.

I remember when I went to Howie Mandel a couple of years ago that his show contain adult content. At the end of the show theses 8 years old kids came up. That really upset Howie. I went to Regis and all he did was sign.

I remember when Jay Leno always went to Casino Rama and for the longest time and I always hoped he would come to the fallsview.

I understand where the Casino is coming from as some of there shows can be offensive.

  21. 21 Traveler

Smoke, first of all, Fallsview Casino IS Government owned. Therefore, isn’t it a bit unusual and out-of-line for a Government to promote VICE on such a grand scale, including to 19 year olds? Second, Niagara Falls is a SHARED asset with the U.S. owning more of the Falls than Canada does, so shouldn’t Americans have some say in how this precious natural asset is managed and protected. And, if the US placed a toxic waste dump on Goat Island, would you say that it was NONE of Canada’s business. Also, don’t you believe that every effort should be made to protect and respect Natural Wonders nomatter what country they’re located in? And, while I don’t defend Vegas, keep in mind that the Casinos in Vegas aren’t parked next to a Natural Wonder. Let me close with a question. Do you believe that MORE mega casinos should be built next to Natural Wonders? Is that the type of World we should leave for our children?

  22. 22 sue

could be so drafty..if i see him tomorrow..i’ll ask and post..traveler…WHOAAA buddy…the US owns MORE of the falls…i’d like to see the specs on that…i’m afraid that because we have the more..umm..how do i say this?…..VIEWER FRIENDLY side…then we’re worth a HELLOVA lot more….
    :)

  23. 23 Smoke

Your making a point that the falls is owned by the united states. The land that the Casino is on is CANADIAN land. Your making it sound like it is right in front of the falls. It is not. There is room to view the falls. Correct me if I am wrong isn’t the Marriott the closet hotel to the horseshoe falls. Why don’t you try to get that closed. You make NF sound like that the Great Barrier Reef. The falls isn’t going anywhere because there is a Casino next to it. The water will still be here tomorrow and beyond. The Falls are beautiful but they aren’t going to help the economy.

I wouldn’t be talking about how we should leave the world for are children. Your country is 9 trillion dollars in debt. Instead of trying to close a Casino why not try to stop the war in Iraq.

I’m done arguing if you want to waste your time, money and resources trying to close a Casino with your bull go ahead. The Casino will still be there no matter what you do.

Thanks for the birthday wish sue.

  24. 24 sue

BRAVO smoke…VERY well said as always..and yur very welcome :)

  25. 25 Traveler

I think we can all agree that Canada has the best view of the Falls. But in terms of acreage (both land and water), the U.S. owns more of the scenic Falls area. Acreage aside, I think that we must ALL pull together to protect all the Natural Wonders of the World. In fact, that’s why the UN (UNESCO) now monitors and strives to protect the World’s Natural Wonders and other “significant natural places.” Taking a “bug off, ON will do whatever it wants with Niagara Falls” approach is no way for Canada to behave in today’s World. And, for what??? Fallsview Casino will actually be a money loser for the citizens of Ontario when the long-term societal costs (gambling addiction, crime, etc.) and cssino-structure related costs (maintenance, future renovations, etc.) are considered. The big winner is……..U.S. Corporations!!! U.S. Corporations had a heavy hand in the development of Fallsview Casino and also are the major component of Falls Management Co., the corporate entity that operates the Casino. Also , U.S. Hotels are the primary beneficiaries of Fallsview Casino. So please enjoy yourselves while the U.S. sets the agenda and dominates Clifton Hill!

  26. 26 Traveler

Hey Smoke, first of all, you’re making a bit of a presumption when you refer to me as an American. Anyway, I find the way that you defend Fallsview Casino ironic, when it’s the Casino (that’s run by a consortium featuring U.S. Corporations) and U.S. Hotels that sit on CANADIAN land and hover over the Falls. Also, I believe that the CEO of Niagara, ON Casinos is an American with a highly questionable back-ground. And, by the way, in case you didn’t know, the U.S. is on the way out as a world economic power. The bottom line is that Canada can do BETTER (and IS BETTER) than Fallsview and the entire Clifton Hill sleaze.

  27. 27 sue

ok…livid here..better to remain silent for now….ok..you have the big white bland balloon…..HUGE tourist attraction…right????..BIG f*^$en deal….ok….but i won’t be quiet for long…niagara is MY place and you AIN’T gonna diss it…understand?….EH?
    :)

  28. 28 Smoke

If you are not an American I apologizes. Since the website has a American address I assume you were American.

  29. 29 Traveler

Yep Sue, I understand you completely. I just hate to see U.S. Hotels and a U.S. run Casino dominate the CANADIAN side of Niagara Falls. When a Country lets U.S. Corporations come in (even if it’s within a specific area) and allows the U.S. to set the agenda, as in Niagara Falls, ON, the host Counrty is nearly always the loser in the long-run.

  30. 30 sue

no no my friend….the only thing that dominates the canadian side of the falls is the CANADIAN GOVERNMENT …NOT the US…i got news for you traveler…the ONLY THING that dominates niagara falls CANADA…is pakistanis and asians.NOT THE U.S…..the only kewl thing that the seneca casino has going for them is smoking…(ok..a big deal)..and the fancy-smancy lights…but you can’t tell me you OWN us…notta chance buddy … we are NOT losers…. :)

  31. 31 sue

  37. 37 sue

    :)

  38. 38 Dan M.

Just to clear one thing up, most of the hotels in Niagara Falls are actually CANADIAN owned with U.S. licenced products. The Sheratons, Marriotts, Hilton, Embassy, Brock Plaze (soon to be Crowne) are all owned by Canadians who have branded their hotels with U.S. companies. The hotels are still owned and operated by Canadians.

Before we go and think about closing the Fallsview Casino, let’s close all the factories along Lakes Erie, Michigan and Huron who dump waste into the water which negatively affect fish population.

Fallsview Casino has generated millions of dollars for the provincial government and the city of Niagara Falls. Traveler, do you have any sources to back your claims that the cost to society out weighs the positive economic impact?

Before this becomes a flame was, please remember the facts and keep an open mind.

  39. 39 Chris

whoa…lots being said in the past 24 hours…anyway…to keep the flame going (if you want!), the way i see NF ON, it is built up by major companies in US AND Canada, second, our tourist attractions are great, anyone disagrees please post. now, NF NY…a HUGE difference…our tourist attractions beat the HELL out of the US ones, (how many, 2?) and basically, anyone dissng the Canadian better look at the american side and tell us what is better about the trashlands.

speaking my word…no offense to anyone :D

  40. 40 Smoke

My Dad got me tickets to see Craig Ferguson at Massey Hall in Toronto. I prefer Craig over Jay anyway.

We were plaining to go in Early August. I’ll be 19 then. I really want to go inside the Casino and see what it is like and play a The Price is Right Slot Machine if they still have it.

I just want to put some positive what the Casino does:

Help Tourism throughout the year. In the winter there isn’t that much to do. The Casino is a option among other stuff to do in the winter. Helping out local business throughout the summer. I know of a few motels that close during the winter.

Provides good paying jobs for 3000 people. The spin off jobs it creates.

The Casino provides a higher end hotel room. Ive been to about 90% of the fallsview hotels and I can honestly say they have one of the best rooms. I love the separate bath and shower.

Provides millions of dollar towards the ontario economy that can help pay for education, health-care, Infrastructure.

The avalon ballroom have brought class acts to ontario. Such as Jay Leno, Howie Mandel, and Regis Philbin.

The Casino helps every hotel, restaurant and srtore in NF by bring tourist to it. I know many people that go to Niagara just to go to the Casino.

I agree that gambling can lead to addiction but if the casino is close they will find another way such as the internet and horse track.

I have bought lotto tickets but I don’t spend more than $25 a month on it.

A lot of the hotels on Lundey Lane are own by people who are Canadian Citizens and live in NF.

This is the last I have to say about it.

  41. 41 drafty

My 2 cents: I can’t think of a single hotel/motel/inn in Niagara Falls that it not locally owned. They may pay to have an American chain name, but even the major hotels are owned by locals like Dicienzo, Menechella, Zappitelli, Kerrio, Oakes. Most of these families started out with some small motel or restaurant and seized the opportunities when they came, so hats off to them.
