Niagara Falls Web Sites: Skylon.com

Other than the Falls themselves, one of the most recognizable landmarks in the tourist area is the Skylon Tower. This week I will highlight the Skylon.com web site.

First off, I’m not sure how long the current site has been up for, but it has been a long time. I’m not a fan of the overall look of the site, but it does have a lot of great information.

The site’s navigation is easy to use and let’s you quickly go to the area of the site that you are interested in. You can view information about either dining area, the observation deck, and the shopping areas. You can check the availability of seating on their site as well. They have partnered with a local company to do this. I tried a few dates and times and some were available and some weren’t, so it definitely appears to be checking something.

The two parts of the site that would be most interesting to the average web surfer are the General Info and the Virtual Tours links. When you follow the General Info link, you can find out all of the facts about the tower. When was it made? How tall is it? How fast does the dining room revolve? I used this part of the site when I was doing my postings after my visit. The Virtual Tours section of the site has some nice pictures and videos to give you an idea of what you will see from such a height.

Spring 2007 CAA Magazine

I am a member of CAA (Canadian equivalent of AAA) and get a magazine from them every few months (quarterly?). The magazine has general content for all CAA members, and then information specific to the region you are in. I just received the Spring 2007 issue and there are several Niagara related items in it (not sure if these items are in all magazines).

  • pg 4 - ad for Holiday Inn by the Falls
  • pg 14 - 17 - the “home base” section mentions several things from the region such as a bridal show at the Fallsview Hotel, the Niagara Parks Winter Magic Pass, and more
  • pg 20 - the “hot spots Niagara” section lists the four diamond award winners for hotels and restaurants in the Niagara Region.
  • pg 36 - ad for the Oakes Hotel
  • pg 37 - ad for the Americana Resort and Spa

Tourism should be treated like ‘export industry’; Government bail-out was slow in coming, conference told

From the Niagara Falls Review:

If every tourism-related business in Ontario laid off one employee, it would be equal to putting the entire population of Niagara Falls out of work - twice - says the chairman of the Tourism Federation of Ontario.

“One hundred and sixty thousand people,” Lou Seiler told an audience at the Binational Tourism Alliance’s second annual cross-border summit at the Sheraton Fallsview, Monday afternoon.

“If any other industry had lost 42 per cent of its most lucrative market (the number of American visitors to Ontario declined that much between 1998 and 2006), the government response would be immediate.

“Tourism is an export industry and should be given the same amount of consideration as any other industry that generates foreign exchange.”
