Toughest two minutes in sports comes to town

From Niagara This Week:

It’s known as the toughest two minutes in sports and for the next four days it will be showcased right in front of the falls.

The 2006 Firefit Canadian Championships is set to begin at the Niagara Parks Commission’s Table Rock parking lot tomorrow. More than 500 professional firefighters from across the country will ply their trade in a race against the clock and each other in competition for national bragging rights and a chance to get into the 2006 World Championships in Henderson, Nevada.

Kite festival near Niagara Falls

From USA Today:

The world’s largest kite will be flown at the Niagara International Kite Festival, to be held in Niagara Falls Oct. 6-9.

The kite measures 83 by 131 feet, and will be flown by a team led by Masaaki Modegi, president of the Japan Kite Association, in Reservoir State Park in Lewiston, on Saturday and Sunday of Columbus Day weekend.

Prospect Park in Niagara Falls State Park will host a re-enactment of an 1848 kite contest on the Friday and Monday of Columbus Day weekend, along with an attempt to connect the U.S. and Canada with an arch of kites.

Passport law could strain border ties

From the Buffalo News:

Mayor Ted Salci was beaming with pride as he sat in his office and rattled off a list of recent tourism success stories in this city.

Two booming casinos. Twelve major hotels built since 1996, with four more in the planning stages. Two spectacular golf courses, with another on the way. A $130 million water park and hotel that opened in April.

But the mayor’s smile became a grimace at the mention of one word: passports.

Daly swings the charm; Pro golfer visits his course, charms his fans in visit to city

From Niagara Falls Review:

John Daly made a whirlwind tour Tuesday of his Thundering Waters signature golf course in Niagara Falls, cutting a swath of smiles everywhere he went.

He mingled with golfers playing in the Kids R King Celebrity Pro-Am, which was raising funds for the Boys and Girls Club of Niagara.

He posed for photos with shivering Hooters girls dressed in tank tops and short shorts, signed balls and T-shirts and posed for photos with the suitably-impressed Grade 4 class from St. Vincent de Paul elementary school.

More Birds Fly Free At The Bird Kingdom

From CanadaTourism.com:

The cages have come down in the Small Aviary at Bird Kingdom at the Niagara Falls Aviary. Bird Kingdom transformed our Small Aviary into a FREE FLYING AVIARY! The Small Aviary was closed to the public for two days for the birds to adjust to their new environment. The Bird Kingdom Keepers monitored their behavior to ensure the safety of the birds. All birds adjusted very well and are now enjoying their new habitat.

Clifton Hill Resorts Update - September 2006

Last Thursday I received the latest Clifton Hill Resorts Update newsletter. It contains the same information it always does. But there is one new interesting thing… It appears that HOCO had a new aerial shot take of the property. I had commented previously that the digitally manipulated image they were using previously looked funny. The new one looks fantastic!

Artists fall for Niagara; Challenge of painting outdoors lures talent from across North America

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Some of North America’s most talented outdoor painters have been in the city to see for themselves the world-famous Horseshoe and American falls.

It took artist Nicole Bestrudderham about 24 hours to get here by plane from Prince Rupert, B.C., but she wasn’t complaining.

“This is a great way to meet other artists and have people see your work,” she said Saturday while painting in Queen Victoria Park across from the American falls.

Trip to Marineland Canada - The Rides

Marineland Canada logo

Along with the animals, there are also a fair amount of rides. Among the 16 currently in operation, there are several different kinds and sizes that should suit all ages.

20060828_marineland_ladybug_01.jpgThe first area that we went to after the show at King Waldorf’s Stadium was the Family Rides section. They have several rides that are aimed at the kids. All of the rides in the entire park were operational other than the Orca Screamer, a kid’s dropzone-type ride. We didn’t go on all the rides, but did manage to get on several of them. Both of my sons went on the Boat Carousel ride with my wife and one of my sisters. We then waited in line for quite a while so my oldest son could go on the Lady Bug Coaster with another one of my sisters. It was a very popular ride, and my son said it was his favourite. Later on yet another sister went on the Tivoli Wheel with both sons.

20060828_marineland_dragonmountain_01.jpg20060828_marineland_skyhawk_01.jpgAs we walked around the park, various members of our group also went on the Sky Hawk, Wave Swinger, Hurricane Cove, and Kandu’s Twister. I’ not really one for rides (I only went on Kandu’s Twister), but my sisters are, and they really enjoyed them. Tow of my sisters went on Dragon Mountain a couple of times. They said it wasn’t the longest or the fastest roller coaster they’ve ever been on, but they still liked it.

Even though my son said the Lady Bug Coaster was his favourite, he seemed the happiest while he was on the Wave Swinger. He seemed so thrilled to be up in the air, flying around.

20060828_marineland_skyscreamer_01.jpgOne of the newest rides is the Sky Screamer. It is a 3-sided dropzone ride. My sisters (the ones who went on the roller coaster) wanted to go on it, but we ran out of time. You could hear it all over the park as it is up on a hill, and they hydraulics that make it work can be quite loud. The next new ride will be a Topple Tower. It is under construction and should be ready for next spring.
