Changes at casino affect 300 staff

From the Niagara Falls Review:

New “customer-friendly” technology in the city’s two casinos hasn’t proven friendly to staff on the gaming floor.

Approximately 300 workers were told recently their jobs have been made redundant by new technology aimed at streamlining efficiency, such as the ticket-in/ticket-out operation of slot machines - instead of coins - and the “table-touch” technology for players at blackjack tables.

News of the changes came to The Review from two former employees, who did not want to be identified because they are currently suing Niagara Casinos, alleging wrongful dismissal.

Motel 6 progress

As reported previously, there is a Motel 6 being built at the corner of Stanley Avenue and Forsythe Street. There is now a sign up recognizing that it will be a Motel 6 and that it will be open in Spring 2007:

I looked for more information, but there is nothing on the Accor Hotels or Motel 6 web sites.
The construction seems to be moving along well. This picture below isn’t great, but you can see that the basement portion has been poured and they are essentially working at ground level now.

Rockettes get kick out of falls

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Mitch Gabe was enjoying his first trip to Niagara Falls Friday when two shapely gals in skimpy outfits caught his eye. His wife Melinda didn’t mind. She was staring, too.

“We’re taking a walk by the falls, I look at these two ladies, and my wife and I said the same thing - ‘They’re Rockettes from New York!’”

It wasn’t their imagination: The famous dancing cuties from Radio City Music Hall were visiting Canada, mingling with tourists and posing for pictures near Table Rock.

Decked out in full Rockette gear, Krista Saab and Jocelyne Levesque - two of only three Canadians in the company - were hoping to lure visitors to Toronto in two months, when the Radio City Christmas Spectacular opens at the Hummingbird Centre for the Performing Arts.

Labour’s lethal weapon

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Actor and special United Nations Ambassador Danny Glover joined hotel workers in a “rally for workplace justice” along Falls Avenue Saturday afternoon.

The workers, all members of UNITE HERE local 2347, work in three hotels owned by Canadian Niagara Hotels - Sheraton on the Falls, Brock Plaza and the Skyline Inn.

UNITE HERE members in the three hotels have filed numerous grievances and unfair labour practice charges at the Ontario Labour Relations Board against Canadian Niagara Hotels, said Mike Belmore, union representative for Local 2347.

Danny Glover in Niagara Falls

As I just posted, Danny Glover was in Niagara Falls today for a union rally. The UNITE HERE workers at the Canadian Niagara Hotels properties have been fighting for a while now, and this was a rally in support of them. I made it down for a couple of minutes of the rally. Unfortunately the microphone system they were using wasn’t very loud, and people kept blowing whistles, honking their horns, and sometimes waving their clap boards, so I really didn’t hear a thing. I did get a couple of pictures of Mr. Glover. Unfortunately I didn’t have my good camera with me, so they aren’t as good as they could be.

Book Now For New Years Eve - Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview

On Tuesday I received the latest newsletter from the Niagara Falls Marriott Fallsview. They are promoting a New Year’s package. I thought the email looked familiar, and sure enough, it is exactly the same email they sent out last year, but with a different year. That’s just lazy!

NIAGARA

From Crazy4Cinema:

The only reason NIAGARA is still around today is because it stars the luminous Marilyn Monroe. This was one of her first major roles and she makes the most of it. Not that there’s any character development or even a decent, script, but, for whatever reasons magic happens between an individual and the camera, you can’t take your eyes off her.

I’ve written extensively about this move in the past:

Firefighters vie for top honours

From the Niagara Falls Review:

When tourist Herbert Matthews from Chicago, Ill., looked out from the 33rd floor of his hotel room to view the Horseshoe Falls, something caught his interest.

Down below in a parking lot, he noticed a large group of firefighters taking part in some kind of a competition, so he went down to investigate.

Even though this was Matthews first visit to Niagara Falls, he felt right at home and for good reason.

“This is great, I wish that I could suit up and get out there,” he said on Thursday while watching the 2006 Firefit Canadian Championships, which was being held near Table Rock just across the street from the Canadian Horseshoe Falls.

As it turns out, Matthews is a Chicago firefighter, with 27 years of service, who had no idea this competition was in town this weekend.
