Time to Sleep Cheap again to help charities

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It’s earlier than usual, but this year’s version of Sleep Cheap, Charities Reap is expected to generate thousands of dollars for local charities while offering local residents bargain rates at Niagara Falls hotels.

The annual promotion will run from Nov. 3 to 6.

At 8 a. m. today, front desks at 28 Niagara Falls hotels will start taking reservations. Participating hotels have set aside 6,000 rooms for the four nights of the promotion, with rates between $35 and $65.

“When the paper comes out (this) morning, the rooms will be released,” said Coun. Jim Diodati, chairman of the event.

“We’re going to have a similar number of rooms as last year, the same hotels as last year with the addition of a couple of new ones.”

Confirmation of 2008 “Sleep Cheap Charities Reap” dates

Last John Riches left a comment and linked to a PDF on the City of Niagara Falls web site that said the Sleep Cheap Charities Reap event was going to take place from November 3 to November 6. I emailed Councillor Jim Diodati for confirmation and he got back to me:

You are correct with regard to the dates of the event…we are doing it much earlier this year as not to conflict with the American Thanksgiving.

The official release of the rooms as well as the media release is almost upon us…advise your followers to keep their eye’s on the local newspapers and/or their websites…

Thanks for your interest Graham!
Jim

Sounds good Jim… Thanks for the information!

Marc Sinodinos has found an original way to be universally funny without sugar coating his opinions or comments. Some people think he¹s offensive, some think he¹s a genius, most find him hilarious.  He has performed at various comedy festivals around North America including Just For Laughs, Washington DC Comedy Festival, New York State Laff Bash, and the New Jersey Comedy Festival.

Looking to make it a ³dinner and a show² night?  Great!  The Frewin Theatre will be offering a scrumptious buffet dinner (roast beef, baked atlantic salmon, chicken parmesan with penne pasta, roasted potatoes, medley of garden vegetables, salads, fresh baked pies, coffee & tea). This option can be added to your show ticket for just $25 (plus taxes/gratuities).  Dinner begins at 6:30 PM.

Niagara Falls Comedy Fest - Members Club

On Wednesday I received an email about the Niagara Falls Comedy Fest. The email was all in plain text, so I have copied it into the post below:

Hello Everyone:

We’ve been hard at work on this year’s Niagara Falls Comedy Fest and further announcements will be made shortly.  But here is the latest updates.  The 2008 Niagara Falls Comedy Fest is being expanded to three days (November 20 22, 2008) at two different venues.

November 20: Komedy for Kidneys Benefit Show We are pleased to host an evening of comedy featuring the talents of home-grown comedians Rodney Pentland and Mark Matthews along with three-time Canadian Comedy Awards winner, Nikki Payne.  The Komedy for Kidneys Benefit Show takes place on Thursday, November 20, 2008 at the Greg Frewin Theatre. Doors open at 7 PM and the show begins at 8 PM.  Proceeds from the event will benefit GNGH’s plans to construct a Kidney Dialysis Centre in Niagara Falls.

Tickets are just $19 (plus taxes/fees) and are now available from the Greg Frewin Theatre as follows: 905 356-0777 (local), 1-866-779-8778, tickets@gregfrewintheatre.com, online at www.gregfrewintheatre.com <http://www.gregfrewintheatre.com/> or in person (5781 Ellen Ave., Niagara Falls, ON).  A group rate of $15 (for 10+ people) is also available.

The aim is to make you laugh so hard you pee your pants, all while raising money for those who can’t pee their pants that is!  The irony is a comedian’s delight, and in this case, we have comedians who know it only too well.

Mark Matthews recently underwent a successful kidney transplant.  He has performed with Jerry Seinfeld, Gilbert Gottfried, and Jimmy “JJ” Walker, and has appeared on Crystal Comedy Quest, The Fruitopia Comedy Fest, Comedy at Club 54 and the CBC show Comics.

Rodney Pentland currently undergoes kidney dialysis treatments four times a week.  He has appeared on The Comedy Network, Comedy at Club 54, Kenny vs. Spenny, Brave New Waves and The Buzz.  His Robert DeNiro and Bill Cosby impressions are second to none.

Nikki Payne donated a kidney to her father.  Her lisp and no-holds-barred style make Nikki standout as an innovator in the Canadian comedy scene.  She has received three Canadian Comedy Awards and two Gemini nominations.  Her Comedy Inc. special on CTV was one of the networks most viewed.  Nikki has appeared on NBC’s Last Comic Standing, The Buzz, and is a regular on Much Music’s Video on Trial.

November 21 & 22: Niagara Falls Comedy Fest Gala Shows The Gala Shows are once again being held at the Niagara Centre for the Arts (4700 Epworth Circle).  We’ll be announcing the line-up shortly.  Also, tickets for the Gala Shows will be available through Ticketmaster.  Stay tuned for further information on this.

Because you¹ve joined the Niagara Falls Comedy Fest Members Club, you’ll be getting the first chance to buy tickets to the Gala Shows. Also, those of you that buy tickets by October 31 will be invited to an exclusive Meet & Greet with the comics after the show.   You may want to invite your friends to join the Members Club. They can do so by going to www.NiagaraFallsComedyFest.com <http://www.niagarafallscomedyfest.com/> .

If you wish to be removed from the Members Club list, simply respond to this email with “Remove Me” in the subject line.

This year’s Niagara Falls Comedy Fest will be held November 20-22, 2008.

Niagara Falls “Sleep Cheap” preview

I don’t mean to mislead you with the word “preview”, but I couldn’t think of any other way to describe it…

I was quite surprised last year with the interest in the sleep cheap event. I had a lot of visitors who found the site because of that. Well, if that is what the people want, I’ll do my best to give it to them. I don’t have any secret inside information, but I can still provide some useful details. Using last year’s official information regarding participating hotels, I am going to take a picture of each hotel and have a posting every day on one of them. It won’t be anything monumental, but there will be a picture or two, a link to their web site, contact information, a link to anything on the blog about that hotel, and a link to a basic Internet search on that property. There were 25 hotels participating last year, and so by October 27 I should be finished. Hopefully by then we’ll know more about which hotels are participating.

Gradually setting up for the Winter Festival of Lights

As Sue has previously mentioned, the work is progressing in setting up the Winter Festival of Light displays.

Niagara opens skies to welcome fifth annual Niagara International Kite Festival

From Niagara Frontier Publications:

The 2008 Niagara International Kite Festival will fill the skies Oct. 2-5 at various locations around Niagara Falls, N.Y., and Niagara Falls, Ontario, while swooping up the imaginations of event-goers of all ages. Last year’s festival drew more than 25,000 kite enthusiasts from around the world, and organizers are forecasting even larger attendance this year.

The festival was named one of the six best international festivals of 2008 by the London Sunday Times Travel Magazine and was recently featured on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

Light of Day - Niagara A Benefit Concert for Parkinsons Disease & ALS

Apparently Yanks Old Niagara restaurant has had a few concerts this year as part of the “Light of Day” benefits. It all culimates on November 14 when there will be a benefit concert:

After a very successful inaugural event in 2007, the Light of Day Niagara team is ready for the upcoming show. We are “just around the corner” from the 2nd Light of Day Niagara. On November 14, 2008, Joe D’Urso, Willie Nile, The Maddhatters and numerous other acts will take the stage of the Greg Frewin Theatre to help raise money for 2 great causes - Parkinson’s Disease and ALS.
