Niagara Falls receives funds for annual New Year’s Eve show

From Niagara This Week:

The city has secured funding from the province to help with the costs associated with the annual New Year’s Eve concert in Queen Victoria Park.

Earlier this year, staff submitted a funding request to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport’s Celebrate Ontario program and was approved. The city will receive $35,000 to help cover costs associated with the event, including securing talent.

“The cost to produce the Niagara Falls New Year’s Eve show increases annually and these additional funds will assist in covering these increased expenses,” council heard from staff in a report that came before them at a special council meeting on June 22.

From the Niagara Falls Review:

A special council meeting has been called for Thursday to discuss the city’s continued concerns about Ontario Lottery and Gaming’s modernization plan.

“We’ve gone on record with having serious concerns with modernization, the way it’s being rolled out, and serious concerns of up to 1,400 jobs being in jeopardy (at the casinos in Niagara Falls),” said Mayor Jim Diodati.

“We’ve done a couple of public meetings and rallies and gatherings (opposing the plan) – we’ve met with the provincial government, we’ve met with OLG, and (Thursday’s meeting will be about) next-step endorsements from council.”

Council is also scheduled to deal with a funding grant application for this year’s New Year’s Eve concert.

New Year’s concertgoers stompa their feet

From Niagara Falls Review:

For High Valley singer Brad Rempel, it was a far cry from his last visit to Niagara Falls.

Before hitting the stage at Queen Victoria Park on New Year’s Eve, he recalled being so broke he stayed in a dingy hotel room that didn’t have a phone or TV, “ and had knife stab marks in the door to the bathroom.”

This time? While walking around the Falls with his family he came across a poster of himself: “That was cool.”

Midway through the band’s set, he soaked it all in. “This is easily the best view from the stage we’ve ever had.”
