From the Niagara Falls Review:
“Niagara Falls surpass in sublimity every description which powers of language can afford of that celebrated scene, the most wonderful which the habitable world presents.”
These words were part of a lengthy description of the cataracts penned by Scottish-born George Heriot in his book, “Travels Through the Canadas,” published in 1807. Heriot was not only responsible for one of the earlier-written accounts of the falls but, as an accomplished artist, some of the earliest paintings as well.
