It’s not easy picking the ‘Wonders’

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Choosing seven wonders that define Canada is too important to be determined by a “mouse-clicking” campaign, says one of the three judges who get the final say in CBC’s contest.

“It isn’t right, as I’m sure you’d agree, for a mouse-clicking campaign to decide matters,” said Roy MacGregor, a columnist with the Globe and Mail who is on the judging panel in the Seven Wonders of Canada contest.

After the people have their say this week, three judges get the final decision on narrowing the 52 nominees down to the seven wonders. As of Friday - the most recent results available - Niagara Falls was on top of the list voted on by the public.

Parks hopes concerts heat up summer

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The Niagara Parks Commission is hoping visitors ‘come sail away’ to a new concert series this summer.

Former Styx lead singer Dennis DeYoung anchors a slate of shows at Queen Victoria Park July 28, teaming up with the Niagara Symphony. Dubbed Hot Summer Nights at the Falls, the series includes the Commodores July 7, Neil Sedaka July 14 and a massive fireworks show July 21 that will see a wall of fire in the gorge more than a kilometre long.

But unlike previous shows at Queen Victoria Park, tickets will cost $25 each.

A walk through history, uphill and down

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It’s known as the ‘Street of Fun,’ but on Sunday, Sherman Zavitz made it the Street of History.

The city’s official historian wasn’t just playing tourist. With close to 50 people in tow, he made his way down and then back up the rambunctious boulevard, pausing where appropriate to discuss what was there in the days before wax museums and arcades.

Among many locals, it’s a noisy, tacky street to avoid all summer. But it has a deep connection with the city, said Zavitz, who writes on local history each Saturday in The Review.

“Its history should get some respect,” he said.

Angry residents say council target of jet boat protest

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Joe Mazeika couldn’t say anything bad about his jet boat tour of the Niagara River.

His only complaint was about what happened in the wake of his Sunday afternoon ride.

As he and his family, visiting from New Jersey, left the Whirlpool Jet Boat Tours’ dock in Niagara-on-the-Lake, they were greeted by close to 70 people from both sides of the river protesting the jet boat operation.

Placards emblazoned with messages such as We Want Our Dock Back, Let The Lease Lapse and Don’t Sell Our River To The Jet Boat were waved before them.

Protesters peppered the Mazeikas with questions as the family walked past them.

It wasn’t Mazeika’s idea of an appropriate Memorial Day weekend activity.

Update on Jay Cochrane coming to Niagara Falls in 2007

A visitor left a comment on a previous post and mentioned that Jay was coming to Niagara Falls this year. I emailed for more details, and this is what I was told:

Jay is in Chicago right now installing/rigging/opening up this year’s production of Cirque Shanghai: Bai Xi. He’ll be heading down to his home in Florida Tuesday, where he’ll be sending his containers (the towers) to Niagara. I’m unaware of the exact performance dates as of yet, but I’ll find out and let you know.

Leaving on a jet boat

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The first splash of cold water comes about 10 minutes into the trip, generating a chorus of cheers from the boatload of soggy thrill-seekers.

But the splash is just that. A bit of water in the face and upper body. Maybe the equivalent of a large cupful for each passenger.

The real drenching is yet to come. Just a few minutes away…

It has been 15 years since Whirlpool Jet Boats Tours began running boats in the Niagara River and controversy has been bubbling in the operation’s wake ever since.

Travelodge keycards

Another in my series on keycards

I’m not sure which hotel this is for, but I found a Travelodge keycard the other day. The toll free number is for the central reservations line for the entire chain. There isn’t anything that is specific to any hotel.

Apples to Apples game, Niagara Falls Card

Apples to Apples is a fun game that my wife’s parents first told us about. Everyone who plays has several cards in their hand with words on them that are nouns (people or places). Then a card is put on the table that is an adjective, and each person who is playing the game puts one of their noun cards down on the table that they think is described by the adjective. Once everyone has put in a card, one player is the “judge”, and the fun begins. You are supposed to try to convince the judge that your card is best. You can talk up your card or put down someone else’s card, even when a card might not fit at all with the word (remember, it is the luck of the draw, and you may have nothing that matches).

Anyway, the other day we were playing it, and I ended up with a Niagara Falls card.

Reshma’s Space - Niagara Falls

One of my alerts took me to a Windows Live Spaces blog where a person named Reshma writes about her visit to Niagara Falls:

Yesterday I spent the entire day visiting the sights in Niagara Falls. I’d bought the Adventure Pass and decided to take full advantage of it - Maid of the Mist, Journey Behind the Falls, the Butterfly Conservatory, and the White Water Walk. There was also a pass for the shuttle bus included so it was perfect. The weather was not too bad, just cloudy with some sunny breaks. The falls were absolutely stunning, and incredibly powerful. You can feel the spraying mist from far away, even atop the the higher hills. At the end of the day I decided to go back to the falls and good thing I did - the sun had come out and formed a rainbow with the mist. It was like a picture-perfect postcard.
