Niagara Falls Question: When did you first come to Niagara Falls?

Every Monday I have a question of the week. This week, the question is:

When did you first come to Niagara Falls?

This is a chance for you to reminisce about your first trip to the Falls. How old were you? What do you remember about the trip? How much did you pay for things? You get the picture…

    I can’t remember.

But the best memory of one of the first trips and I am sure there was way more before this one.

My older sister had my brother drive us to the Airport where I live in Rochester NY and took a 15min airplane ride to Buffalo where we took a cab over the border. We stayed at the Hotel which is now the Comfort Inn Clifton Hill and we Stayed a week and did pretty much everything you could do. I remember going to the Japanese Restaurant at the old Maple Leaf Village and getting Fudge there as well. There was also the amusement park behind.

My very first visit was in 1954…..I was 14 years old and the only thing I remember is a chunk of Prospect Point fell off the next day after we left!!! Then a couple of years after that, I think there was another trip. No photos….didn’t own a camera.

But in 1962, my husband and I spent our honeymoon there and it has been a love affair with the Falls ever since!!! I still have some literature I collected from our honeymoon. I have a tendency to save stuff…..ask Karen!!!

Was I 8? Mom? Would have been 1977? We had a camera then. Mom - we have to drag out the albums!!! I’m sure bell-bottoms or shorts with white piping were involved.

Don’t remember much from the early years…maybe being at the very edge of the horseshoe falls and feeling like I was on a boat as the water rushed by. Maybe Clifton Hill and some of the museums.

That trip started the accumulation of memories of walks through Victoria Park, trips up the Skylon, Maple Leaf Village, various Gift shops…etc.

Its amazing how I have merged all those memories with new ones with my husband and treasures we’ve discovered on our own - Like Niagara Gorge - we’re the only ones in the family who have been down there. That’s thanks to Prof. Keith Tinkler after seeing him on various Niagara specials - he made us want to explore that area. We actually saw him at Pen Centre once, but he walked by too fast to give us the chance to say hi. (what a Niagara Geek I am huh?)

My first visit was back in the late 80’s with some friends that were there for a church convention at what was the convention center at that time (now the Seneca Casino). I remember going across the Rainbow bridge to the Canadian side and stretching to get my first glimpse of the Falls! AWESOME! Then of course taking in everything there was to see. I remember going to Ripley’s and the Maple Leaf, Skylon. And a lot of walking and just taking in the view.

Hey Mom, drag out those albums!! We want to see Karen in her bellbottoms! Hum…. now, where are my first pics…

Nice. I knew I’d get in trouble with the bellbottom comment with this crowd. I think there was probably a Toni Tennille type hairdo to go with them if that ups the amusement factor for you. I was 8 years old people!!! Why’d you do it to me mom, WHY ?!?!?! : ) LOL!

Ah, yes, the photos….lots of blackmailing could be done with those! I don’t think her husband has seen them…YET…or her sister-in-law (our daughter-in-law)!!! LOL

All kidding aside, my favorite childhood photo of Karen was taken by the railing down by the Falls the first time we went during the winter…she was almost 9. Lots and lots of memories……..

……..and to Sue, you really know how to hurt a gal…. LOL
