Sir Harry Oakes

    During the seven short years that he lived in The Bahamas, Harry Oakes was to make a great impact on the society. Originally from Maine in the United States, Oakes decided in his youth that he wanted, above all, to be a wealthy man. Educated at Bowdoin College, he worked for two years in New York City but in 1896, he joined approximately 30,000 men who were searching for gold in the Klondike in Northwest Canada.

    Sir Harry Oakes is the grandfather of the current operators of HOCO (stands for Harry Oakes COmpany. He owned quite a bit of property in Niagara Falls and eventually ended up with the property on the south side of Clifton Hill. He lived in the Bahamas for several years, and this article gives some nice detail of his life there. Niagara Falls is only mentioned in passing.
