Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic - Annie Taylor

The sixth part of the Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic movie is 6 minutes long and is about Annie Taylor. She was a school teacher who was the first person to go over the Falls and live. The Making Of special shows a couple of shots of how they filmed the barrel going over the Falls. They had a large crane out right over the Falls. They dropped a barrel from the crane and then filmed it going over.

The movie is fantastic, whether in the IMAX theatre or at home. Pictures and reviews don’t do it justice. If you are fascinated by Niagara Falls and its history, then you should definitely see the movie.

There’s no cheating in the film, no special effects, no models, it’s all what you see is the truth.

The movie is fantastic, whether in the IMAX theatre or at home. Pictures and reviews don’t do it justice. If you are fascinated by Niagara Falls and its history, then you should definitely see the movie.

The second part of the Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic movie is about the first explorers who “discovered” Niagara Falls. The scene is about 4 minutes long and tesll the story of Father Joseph Hennepin when he and a group of explorers came across the falls in the Winter of 1678. Father Hennepin was definitely awestruck by the Falls, and the movie quotes him as follows:

In all our journey nothing I’ve seen or imagined can be referenced to compare with the wonder of this place the Indians call “Thundering Water” - Niagara.

The movie is fantastic, whether in the IMAX theatre or at home. Pictures and reviews don’t do it justice. If you are fascinated by Niagara Falls and its history, then you should definitely see the movie.

Niagara: Miracles, Myths and Magic - The DVD

Back in September I visited the IMAX Niagara Falls Theatre and wrote several postings about the theatre, the movie, the daredevil exhibit. I also posted a copy of their promotional leaflet. At that time, I borrowed a copy of the DVD of the movie, and I finally got around to watching it closely and have taken some notes and screenshots to post.

Whether seen on the IMAX-sized screen at the theatre, or in your home, the movie is still very impressive. I only have a 27″ TV with the sound coming out of a simple 2-speaker stero. Both the audio and visual of the DVD were impressive.

The movie has a few trailers for other Destination Cinema movies (Grand Canyon The Hidden Secrets, Hidden Hawaii, Hearst Castle - Building the Dream, Whales - An Unforgettable Journey, Yellowstone), a 20-minute long The Making Of special, and the movie itself. The whole thing is about an hour long (the movie is 40 minutes, the making of special is 20 minutes)

The DVD has 6 language tracks for the movie

As can be expected from a movie like this, the shots of the falls are incredible. I started to take some screenshots, but there were just too many to put in a blog posting, so I have created a gallery in the Niagara Falls Image Gallery.

The movie is fantastic, whether in the IMAX theatre or at home. Pictures and reviews don’t do it justice. If you are fascinated by Niagara Falls and its history, then you should definitely see the movie.

Ripley Entertainment to Open Waterpark Resort

From a press release at Hospitality 1st:

Orlando, FL – February 2006 – Ripley Entertainment, coming off a record 2005, will continue to expand in 2006, Ripley President Bob Masterson told managers and franchisees at its 35th annual company conference in early February.

The entertainment company plans on opening at least two more Ripley’s Believe It or Not! odditoriums and through its Canadian entity will be making its official entry into the hospitality industry with the opening of Great Wolf Lodge, an all-suite indoor water-park resort in Niagara Falls, Ontario. Masterson predicts that the number of people visiting Ripley facilities in 2006 will grow 10% over 2005 numbers.

The new four-story, 406-room all-suites Northwood’s-themed Great Wolf Lodge includes a sprawling 103,000-square-foot water park, one of the largest in North America. A water-lover’s dream-come-true, the park will feature 13 slides, four activity and play pools, three family and adult whirlpools, a giant wave pool, a lazy river and a four-story interactive water-fort playground. The park’s thousands of gallons of heated water will remain a comfortable 84 degrees F (29C) year-round.

Following the opening of the lodge and waterpark, work will begin on Ripley’s Aquarium of Canada, a 120,000-square-foot state-of-the-art facility situated adjacent to the lodge, on 25-acres overlooking the Niagara Gorge. Tentatively scheduled to open in early 2008, the world-class aquarium will eventually serve as the company’s flagship property.

Casino deal raises alarm

From Niagara This Week:

Word that the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLGC) is only planning to extend its lease agreement for Casino Niagara for two years is adding to speculation that the days may be numbered for the original gambling facility in the Falls.

Fearing 2,500 jobs and hundreds of millions of dollars in new development could be a risk, Niagara Falls Mayor Ted Salci is calling on the province to show its confidence in the city as a major tourist destination by arranging a lease of at least 10 years with Canadian Niagara Hotels, the landlord that owns the property the casino is on.

Can I bug you to try this salsa?

From Niagara This Week:

Jeff Stewart takes pride in feeding insects to others.

It’s not that he has any perverse intentions. He’s not in it the business of cooking up critters for the shock value. Rather, he wants to use his creepy-crawly culinary skills to open cultural boundaries in Canada and wants North Americans to consider swerving from the straight and narrow approach he said we’ve become accustomed to when talking about and consuming food.

“It’s not about the shock factor,” said the Niagara Falls chef who was at the Niagara Parks Butterfly Conservatory over the weekend for the first International Insect Food Festival. “I want to try to create more open minds as to what food is.”
