Mayor: New Year’s show needs $2M in tourism support

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Niagara Falls Mayor Jim Diodati wants to avoid last year’s mess with the New Year’s Eve show, but once again “the challenge is money.”

He needs to convince the city’s tourism partners to help pay about $2 million to get the concert back on a national broadcaster, which is much the same predicament he found himself last year.

“The funding model has completely changed,” he said. “Because of that, the networks can’t afford to subsidize the show the way they once did.”

Last year’s New Year’s Eve show at Queen Victoria Park was the first in 25 years not to be broadcast by either an Ontario or national network. Negotiations with Global came to an end in November when the network announced it would not televise the show for the first time since taking over from CHCH in 2009.

As a result, the line-up for the untelevised concert wasn’t announced until Dec. 16. The scaled back show featured Tom Cochrane, Dennis DeYoung and Alan Doyle.

Bette Midler a Fallsview Casino sellout

From the Buffalo News:

Bette Midler has always been quotable. Often she’s been definitive. Back when she was only a recent emigrant from New York’s Continental baths, the Divine Miss M observed about Karen Carpenter that there was nothing wrong with her singing, “it’s her drumming that sucks.” When she met Queen Elizabeth after a command performance, she informed us all back home “honey’s she’s the whitest woman you ever saw.”

It has been a long-established fact that Midler is one of the greatest talkers – and wisecrackers – extant. What that means is that some of the luckiest people in Western New York and Southern Ontario are those who have bought tickets for Midler’s two sold-out shows (7 p.m. Sunday and 8:30 p.m. Monday) at the Fallsview Casino in Niagara Falls, Ont.

My trip to Marineland yesterday

Yesterday afternoon I went to Marineland with my family. We were there a month or so ago, but before that it had been a couple of years.

I was surprised at how busy it was on a Tuesday afternoon. The parking lot certainly wasn’t full (if you haven’t been, their parking lot is HUGE), but the overflow area was open, and cars were continually coming in and going out.

Since the park was so busy, we didn’t bother to try to go on any rides. We had brought our dinner, and then we watched the show in King Waldorf Stadium. To be honest, we weren’t really looking forward to it as the last several times we’d seen it we were quite bored. Well, sometime in the last couple of years they have updated the show. The animals still do most of the same tricks, but the show is funnier and definitely geared more towards the kids. About 15 minutes before the show starts, a guy comes out and is cleaning up the stage. He ends up goofing around, and does a lot to get the crowd involved. Once the show actually starts, he is there for a bit as well. My kids loved it. My daughter was particularly thrilled to see the dolphins.

After the show, we got some ice cream and frozen lemonade, and then walked to Friendship Cove to see the Orca whales and the Beluga whales. We just missed the tail end (no pun intended) of the splash show with the Orca whales. This was the first time I had seen Ikaika and Kiska together in many trips. A couple of years ago they always seemed to be apart, and earlier this year they were apart. Not this time. After the show, Ikaika followed Kiska around closely.

I didn’t bring my regular camera with me, but I did have my Blackberry, so here are some pictures from the show, and from Friendship Cove.
