    The other day I was at Coles book store in the Pen Centre where I was browsing the Canadiana books (there were lots of them because of the Canada 150 celebration). One that caught my eye was 25 Places in Canada Every Family Should See by Jody Robbins. As expected, there was a Niagara Falls section.

    Niagara Falls has done it again, coming in at Number One on another list. And this list has nothing to do with the nation’s most dangerous cities, overtaxed municipalities or unwanted teen pregnancies, either!

    Last week the readers of USA Today voted the Cataract City as the “Best Kid-Friendly Destination” in the country. The newspaper’s reasoning of the choice was scant, as is typical of USA Today.

    “Only a handful of votes separated our winner from the runner up, but in the end, Niagara Falls, N.Y. came out on top,” the entry read. “Families flock to this northeastern city to experience the awe-inducing grandeur of this natural wonder, whether aboard the Maid of the Mist or from the Cave of the Winds. Aside from the cascades, Niagara is packed with other family-centric attractions.”

    For our family summer vacation this year, we decided a long plane trip wasn’t necessary. Perhaps I’d worn out my wife and kids on long-distance travel so we planned to just head north of the border and enjoy the sights of Ontario, Canada, specifically Niagara, for a change of pace.

    We checked into the Sheraton on the Falls Hotel and immediately appreciated the spectacular view from our 11th-floor room situated directly across the Niagara River from the American Falls.
