Festival of Lights goes bigger, brighter for 35th year

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

The Winter Festival of Lights turns 35 this year, but for organizers the challenge is making it feel born again every year.

So expect more new wrinkles, displays and events when the two-month festival kicks off Nov. 18, says executive director Tina Myers.

“The ideas are flowing,” she said after a media conference Wednesday. “We have a lot of things that we want to do, but it costs money. Each year, between January and March, we go out and really hit it hard to try to get the funding to make this happen.

“We have some strong supporters, but each year that we grow, our expenses grow.”

    From Niagara This Week:

The city has secured funding from the province to help with the costs associated with the annual New Year’s Eve concert in Queen Victoria Park.

Earlier this year, staff submitted a funding request to the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Sport’s Celebrate Ontario program and was approved. The city will receive $35,000 to help cover costs associated with the event, including securing talent.

“The cost to produce the Niagara Falls New Year’s Eve show increases annually and these additional funds will assist in covering these increased expenses,” council heard from staff in a report that came before them at a special council meeting on June 22.

Nik Wallenda Asks Public For Donations

From WKBW Channel 7 in Buffalo:

Daredevil Nik Wallenda is asking the public to help him pay for expenses connected to his historic high wire walk above Niagara Falls later this month.

Wallenda posted a YouTube video on indiegogo.com, a money-raising site, with a goal of $50,000.

“One thing I’ve learned about walking a natural wonder like Niagara Falls is that it’s extremely costly,” Wallenda said in the video.

“There have been so many unforeseen costs that have come up lately. And I need your help to raise the money to make this thing happen,” he said.
