Hornblower cruises season starts (last) Saturday

    I know I’m a couple of days late…

    From the Niagara Falls Review:

Hornblower Niagara Cruises is set to sail for a fourth season, starting Saturday.

The relatively mild winter meant there was no ice buildup in the Niagara River, so the boat tour operator set the April 1 start date and also began accepting bookings last month.

“We have some weather and ice-modelling programs that we’ve created over the last couple of years and, about a month ago, we knew there were not going to be any significant ice concerns so we livened up our ticket sales,” said general manager Mory DiMaurizio.

The popular tourist attraction also opened April 1 last year.

“It was a great early start to the season and a great indicator of what was a landmark year,” he said.

By comparison, the 2015 season didn’t start until April 30, following one of the coldest, longest winters on record. It’s inaugural season in 2014 started May 15.

Boats are equipped with radiant heaters and visitors have the option of viewing the cataracts from “dry zone” areas.

Winter Festival of Lights photos from last year

I’ve been out a couple of times this year to look at some of the lights, but haven’t taken many pictures. The other day in my Google Photos timeline, a notification came up telling me to “remember this day”. It was the photos from last year’s Winter Festival of Lights.

So, I may not have this year’s photos, but here are last year’s (very much the same).

    boxing-day-11

Boxing Day is a holiday celebrated in many countries, including Canada. These days, it is pretty much a HUGE shopping day where you can get some post-Christmas deals. As you read this, I’m probably out shopping or was out shopping earlier. I’m not looking for anything specific, but we’ll see if anything catches my eye 🙂

    Museums Dollar Day back

    From Niagara This Week:

While the loonie may be being hit hard on currency markets, it will still be enough to pay for a lot of fun on Clifton Hill for Niagara Falls residents on Sunday.

It’s that one day of the year when Niagara Falls residents can check out some of the museums and attractions on the city’s “Street of Fun” for just a buck. And it’s going to a worthy cause to boot. The Jan. 11 event is the annual Dollar Museum Day for Cystic Fibrosis, which takes place from 10 a.m to 5 p.m.

    Brief Marineland 2014 season recap

Occasionally I have a regular reader send me in his thoughts/observations about Marineland. Like a lot of people, he is conflicted about the park. He has great memories and see so much potential, but the current situation just doesn’t seem right.

Here are some of his comments:

I still check the park periodically via social media and such as I haven’t been to the park in ages… I’m hoping to go for the 2015 season!

But here’s a recap of the 2014 season:

    • In March 2014 there was a bulldozer spotted behind Friendship Cove’s area

    • Peanut and her calf from 2013 passed away during the winter 2013-2014

    • Kelowna’s 2nd calf passed away in the winter 2013-2014

    • Kiska began play sessions with toys since May-June

    • Isis, Acadia, Aurora, Skyla, Rose and Talia were pregnant this year; all have given birth to healthy calves but Talia whom is still expecting or a stillbirth occurred (unconfirmed)

    • Belyi, the park’s first beluga passed away in August

    • Rain and Charmin are the only wild caught females who haven’t gotten pregnant yet.

    • Deadmau5 letter to the park… I personally want to take over MLC in a heartbeat but I can’t 🙁

Note: These are just his observations and I have presented them as is. I do not know how accurate they are, and have not tried to confirm anything.
