Demonstration outside Fallsview Casino

As I was out for my walk today, I was going up Murray Hill and there were several police cars. As I got to Fallsview Blvd, I noticed there was a very large demonstration in front of the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort. There were dozens of people blowing whistles and holding up various signs. Some of the read:

  • Don’t fold on fill-time
  • Kickin’ ass for the working class
  • All those dollars and no sense
  • Full house, not a poor house
  • Trying to live is a full-time job
  • Families helping families
  • United we stand, divided we starve
  • Keep the rat from getting fat

There was also a pickup truck with a very large blow-up rat.

The new smoking room at the Fallsview Casino looks to be complete. I don’t know if it is open for use yet or not.

Lisa’s Travels, Trials and Treats: Niagara Falls

Someone named Lisa recently came to Niagara Falls and blogged about it:

We arrived in Niagara Falls around 5:00 p.m. on Friday night and stayed until Sunday morning, where we left and headed over to Lilydale and from there over to Geneva to visit Don’s cousin Ron.

We went to both Casinos while in Niagara Falls and didnt win anything, but didnt lose much either. It was just fun to play on $20.00 for awhile. :) While in Niagara Falls, of course we went to see the Falls, both the Canandian and the American. We also took a drive over to Goat Island which is on the American side. We had a couple of nice dinners at a place called Kelseys which is at the top of Clifton Hill.

CRACKING the casinos’ CODE

From the Niagara Falls Review:

If you’ve gone to a casino, it’s not a coincidence if you felt drawn in by the flashing lights, ringing bells and the maze of slot machines.

That’s exactly how casino operators want it to be, said Karen Finlay, associate professor at the University of Guelph’s school of Marketing and Consumer Studies.

“It’s the design of the casino,” said Finlay, who has studied the issue of problem gambling for several years.

Finlay and a team of researchers at the university recently unveiled a lab known as ‘Virtual Vegas’ - a 360-degree, 1,700 square foot composite of 17 of the Sin City’s most famous gaming floors. It’s aimed at helping researchers understand what compels people to keep playing even after they know it’s time to go home.

New casino gallery is a work of art

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Within the Niagara Falls arts community, it has to qualify as a victory: One fine art gallery closes, and another takes its place.

No sooner did the Wyland Gallery inside the Niagara Fallsview Casino close shop than Toronto dealer Trevor Sandquist was packing his bags.

Out with the old art, in with the new. For collectors, the David Leonard Fine Art gallery offers a unique chance to view - and own, if your wallet’s big enough - rare, original pieces by Matisse, Degas and Rembrandt.

Niagara Falls: What You Don’t Want to Miss

Trifter is a “user powered website dedicated to providing you with the highest quality travel oriented content on the web.” Whether that is true or not, I don’t know, but they recently had a posting about Niagara Falls:

Whether going on your honeymoon or just looking for a weekend getaway, Niagara Falls in Ontario Canada is a great vacation spot. From the falls to the casinos, there’s a lot to do in only a few days. Here are some of the more popular attractions you won’t want to miss out on.

Casino offers respite from Christmas

From the Niagara Falls Review:

While many families in the city played with new toys, cooked turkeys and picked up mountains of wrapping paper Christmas Day, hundreds of others whiled away the hours at the Fallsview Casino.

Jack, a senior from Burlington, said he and his “gal” turned the prospect of a bleak Christmas Day without their families who are in the sunny south into a mini-break of their own.

“It’s a break from the regular Christmas routine,” said Jack who, like all of the people interviewed in the Fallsview Casino’s food court and foyer did not want to give their last name.

It’s the same for John and his family from Hamilton, who also decided to forsake the hustle and bustle of Christmas by spending time away together.

“It was strange (waking up in a hotel room on Christmas morning),” John admitted. “But we’ve had a lot of fun.”

Niagara Falls Ranked One Of Top Ten Gambling Getaways In The World By MSN.com

WIVB has a story about how MSN has ranked Niagara Falls as one of the world’s 10 gambling getaways:

Seneca Gaming Corporation (SGC) is proud to announce that its Niagara Falls, NY property, Seneca Niagara Casino & Hotel, has been included in the MSN.com poll, “Top 10 Gambling Getaways.”

The December 12th article ranked the top ten action-packed gaming vacation destinations in the world where visitors will find that, “the odds are in (their) favor on and off the floor.”

The MSN article mentions the casinos on both sides of the border (not just the US casino). You can view the short paragraph about Niagara Falls and read about the other 9 locations in the Top 10 Gambling Getaways article.
