Parks Police may get 11th hour reprieve from province

From Niagara This Week:

Niagara Parks Police may soon get a new lease on life — at least for five more years.

Just days before the 123-year-old police force faced being shut down, the Niagara Regional Police Services board voted last week to recommend to Community Safety and Corrections Minister Rick Bortolucci that the Parks constables have their status as special constables renewed for five more years.

The constables would also continue to be able to carry firearms. Bortolucci must still approve that status.

“We supported it and we sent it off to the minister last Thursday,” acting regional police board chair Doug Martin, said Wednesday. “We haven’t heard anything back yet; we’re expecting it soon.”
