“Superman Returns” Countdown at Niagara Falls

Yesterday I posted my pictures of the lame “Superman Returns” laser logo on Terrapin Point. I said it wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. Well, it seems that depending on when you are there, you’ll see different things. Regular visitor Louise send me a link to the Superman Homepage where they have some good pictures of the logo. I wish I would have seen this when I was there.

The have 6 pictures:

  • The red S symbol on the American side of the gorge. A much better picture than I took
  • A beautiful full-colour S symbol on the Canadian side of the gorge. It looks great, but seeing as almost everyone views the Falls from the Canadian side, it is kind of dumb place to put the symbol. No wonder I didn’t see it. I’d have to be looking down at my feet.
  • The red S symbol actually on the Horseshoe Falls
  • A white S symbol on the Canadian side of the gorge. It looks quite good as the light shines through the mist
  • A zoomed out shot of the Horeshoe Falls showing both the red S symbol on the American side and the full-colour S symbol on the Canadian side
  • Another shot of the full-colour S symbol

Here is a small version of one of the full-colour shots. Visit the Superman Homepage for a larger size and all the other images.

Niagara Fallsview Casino in Spring 2006

I’ll let you in on a little secret… I’ve never been in either Casino Niagara or Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort. It’s just not my thing. But I do have to admit that the Niagara Fallsview Casino Resort is gorgeous. The gardens and water features out front are a great place to take pictures. Over the last few weeks I’ve taken a few pictures and created a new section in the Niagara Falls Image Gallery.

Superman symbol/logo report

Ok, so I’ve heard several news reports about the Superman “S” symbol/logo being shown on the Horseshoe Falls each night from Saturday to Wednesday starting at 9 pm. Last night I brought the whole family down with the sole purpose of seeing the symbol, and having a nice walk while we were doing it. So we got here at about 9:10 pm, and from the Maid of the Mist plaza, we couldn’t see anything. We waited for a few minutes thinking that maybe they were just a bit late. Then I started to think that I had the time wrong. We started to walk closer to the Falls so we could see it better when it came on at 9:30 (or so we thought). As we got closer, we noticed red lights on the side of the gorge right beside the Horseshoe Falls, and as we got closer, we saw that it was a message that flashed repeatedly:

S (the Superman symbol)
Returns
2
Days

I took some pictures, but the message was so dim and so far away it was hard to get good ones:

We were in the area for about an hour, and never once saw more than that lame, red message. Either they have falsely advertised what it was going to be, or we just happened to go down on a night where they were having problems. Either way it was disappointing.

A ‘Super’ role for the falls

I reported previously on the Superman Returns promotion where the Superman “S” logo will be lit up on Niagara Falls. The Buffalo News has a short article with some information on the Niagara Falls scenes from Superman II, a picture of Christopher Reeve during the filming, and an interesting tidbit about how he looked.

One new restaurant, extra large

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The new Tim Hortons restaurant on Clifton Hill could become the chain’s busiest franchise in the country.

The 5,000-square-foot restaurant opened on the Victoria Day long weekend in May. By comparison, the average Tim Hortons outlet is 3,000 square feet.

An average store serves more than 1,000 people a day, said Harry Oakes, president of HOCO, Ltd. which operates the restaurant. But he expects that number to increase with the hot days of summer.

“We’re hoping for 3,000 to 6,000 people in the summer,” said David Allen, food and beverage manager of the restaurant.

Niagara Falls in Spring

Technically Spring ended just 5 days ago, so I’m not really that late…

Several weeks ago I took a series of pictures of Niagara Falls in Spring. This is something I try to do each year (Spring 2003, Spring 2004, Spring 2005), and although the pictures generally look the same year to year (the Falls don’t change that much to the visible eye), they are still beautiful. Some years I take the pictures early enough that I get some great shots of the Niagara Parkway, but not this year. But it was a great day when I took the pictures, so they are especially clear.

You can see larger versions of the images below and many more in the Niagara Falls in Spring 2006 gallery.

On a final note, this brings the Niagara Falls Image Gallery total to 1,645 images.

Ripley’s Wax Zone leaflet

One of the newer trends over the last few years is to have visitors to your attraction make a wax hand. The first attraction in Niagara Falls I remember having this was Movieland Wax Museum of Stars. Not too long afterwards Ripley’s added this to their Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Museum. Essentially you dip your hand in wax a few times and let it dry. You pull your hand out and you have a mould of your hand that can be filled and/or decorated.

I’ve scanned the promotional leaflet for Ripley’s Wax Zone and included the text below:

At the time of this posting, a single, hollow hand is $6.95 while a single, solid hand is $11.95. A double, hollow hand is $13.50 while a double, solid hand is $23.50. Additional colours are $1.99 each and glazing is $6.95 per hand. There are also a variety of accessories that can be added to the hands for various prices.

Cirque Niagara video clip

This past Friday, WKBW an ABC affiliate out of Buffalo, had a piece on the Cirque Niagara Avaia presentation. The clip shows some scenes from the show, an interview with the owners, as well as some information about the horses. The clip runs about 2 minutes and provides some nice information.

A few Saturday observations…

A few random observations after being out and around today:

  • This morning was overcast and humid, but it has cleared up this afternoon. There seems to be a lot of people around.
  • Both the Clifton Hill and the Fallsview tourist districts seemed quite busy today.
  • The Golden Griddle at the Imperial Hotel & Suites is open now. They also have a small patio under the awning at the front of the restaurant.
  • It occurred to me today that I haven’t seen the WWE PileDriver ride open yet this year. Today seemed to be a fairly busy day, yet it was still closed.
  • The Niagara SkyWheel seems to be doing well. There were line-ups today waiting to get on.
  • HOCO has put a lot of greenery (trees, shrubs, plants, grass) around the Niagara SkyWheel plaza/courtyard. It looks great.
  • I still haven’t seen anyone use the new Coco’s patio.
