Police praise local pilot

    From the Niagara Falls News:

A local helicopter tour operator is being praised by police for his actions last Thursday.

Police said the pilot 33-year-old Lonnie Rumig of Niagara-on-the-Lake showed tremendous responsibility toward his passengers when he decided to set an aircraft down in a local park, after noticing it was not responding to his satisfaction.

On April 20 at 3:30 p.m. the pilot took his Bell 206 Jet Ranger II helicopter with four adult passengers for a routine flight over Niagara Falls.

About 10 minutes later Ruming felt that the helicopter wasn’t operating to his satisfaction.

He decided to land in an unoccupied baseball field at Ker Park near Swayze Drive in Niagara Falls and send the passengers back to the airport by shuttle, and have the helicopter checked. An engineer inspected the aircraft, and cleared it to fly back to the airport.
