Oh Canada Eh? offers Christmas Survival Guide

From Niagara This Week:

Embrace the true meaning of the holiday season for only $34.95 with A Christmas Survival Guide.

That’s the opening line to a comedic look at what can only be described as the most stressful time of the year as many people curse and scramble in crammed shopping malls searching for a gift for that special someone.

Running at the Oh Canada Eh? Dinner Show until Dec. 28, A Christmas Survival Guide will tickle funny bones with a production that pokes fun at the holiday season.

‘Son of TVN’ application coming

From Niagara This Week:

As far as Wendell Wilks is concerned, Niagara is distinct from Toronto and Hamilton and deserving of its own television station.

And to deny the region its own voice is to deny it its constitutionally-guaranteed freedom of expression, he adds…

“TVN Niagara will not apply further,” he said. “But Wendell Wilks, who is the president and CEO of TV Niagara, has every intention of coming out with the son of TVN.”

Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame Ceremonies January 15

From Niagara This Week:

The 17th annual Niagara Falls Sports Wall of Fame induction ceremony is scheduled to take place Sun., January 15 at 2:00 p.m. at the Niagara Falls Memorial Arena.

This year’s inductees include:

1900-1970 Era:

Harry Oakes - Benefactor

I believe this is the original Sir Harry Oakes. He is the grandfather of the current operators of the HOCO (Harry Oakes COmpany) properties. He donated land for a huge sports park in Niagara Falls. A quick Google search brings up all sorts of interesting information.

Of course there are a lot of other deserving people being recognized that night as well. Read the Niagara This Week article for the entire list.

Clifton Hill Resorts Update mid-December newsletter

I just received the December 2005 issue of the Clifton Hill Resorts Update newsletter. Although repetitive, they seem to be the only place around that regularly sends out a newsletter. The colours are good, the trivia is nice, but it would be great if they could include more history, trivia, or general information about the area. I understand that they have to promote their attractions and accomodations, but if people are only visiting once a year, then they need to have other content to keep people interested.

This latest issue contains:

  • Niagara Falls Trivia
  • Visit Niagara Falls in December
  • Feature Special: Attractions Package
  • Niagara Falls Casino Package
  • December Two Night Getaway Package
  • Gift Ideas in Niagara Falls, Canada
  • Niagara Falls Trivia answer

You can subscribe to the newsletter on their site.

Jolley Cut Hotel

The November 2005 issue of Lodging Hospitality Magazine has advertisements on pages 15 and 16 (in the “Branding Briefs” section) for Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. The ad on page 15 is for the Westin Fallsview, Niagara Falls:

Niagara Falls, Ontario
Westin Fallsview, Niagara Falls

The mesmerizing power of nature creates an unforgettable backdrop for the Westin Fallsview, Niagara Falls, scheduled to welcome travelers in January 2008. Of all the major branded hotels in the area, Westin’s towering structure is the closest to the falls with an unobstructed view. Many of the 356 guestrooms offer private balconies. And all are distinguished by environments of renewing comfort, showcasing the Heavenly Bed, Heavenly Bath and new signature amenities. Westin Fallsview features two food and beverage outlets, 12,000 square feet of meeting space and a full-services spa and fitness center.

A Priceless Falls View

If you visit our previous post on the proposed Skylon Tower property hotels, you’ll see on the left-hand side a square cut out of the building. The hotel has to be like that as that is the property line. I presume that the Jolley Cut hotel basically fits right in there and extends to the edge of the escarpment.

The City of Niagara Falls New Developments page has a link to a map where the Jolley Cut hotel will be. The property is owned by Canadian Niagara Hotels, the Falls Avenue people.

You can see basic details at Emporis or at Skyscraper City

The Amazing Race concludes in Niagara

The family edition of the Amazing Race concluded last night with the following events:

..the teams drove 81 miles south to Queenston, where they jumped into jet boats and motored out to the Niagara River whirlpool that contained a buoy holding their next clue. After retrieving it, the excited teams learned they were headed across the river to their final destination: Lewiston, NY.

After jetting their boats ashore — alleluia — the teams were given one final Roadblock, a task in which one member of each team had to puzzle their way through a large 71-piece jigsaw map of North and Central America. Nick Linz was able to overcome his initial inability to remember the true location of Oklahoma to beat Wally Bransen in their quest to pick up the pieces, and the jubilant Linz siblings met The Amazing Race host Phil Keoghan at the finish mat, where they were greeted with the following watered-down finish line words:

“25 days… 50 cities… and more than 600 consecutive hours together as a family… Linz family, you are the official winners of The Amazing Race”

I’ve never been on the boats that go up the rapids, but I’ve seen them many times. I don’t know if I’m brave enough to go on them. But if a million dollars was riding on it, I’d probably find the nerve to do it :-)
