I know, I know… I keep posting about this place… but it looks like it’s almost done.

All things Niagara Falls tourism…
All along Queen Victoria Park are beautiful gardens. Today I took this picture of a butterfly and a bee on a sedum plant.

The billboard we mentioned previously has made it a step further:

This is at the corner of Stanley and Robinson, right across the street from three Skylon Tower billboards.
Today the Drabbles are on the Maid of the Mist.

One of my favourite cartoons is Drabble by Kevin Fagan. I use my web feed reader to read it every day. Well, they’ve come to Niagara Falls! They “arrived” yesterday (August 15) and I will post the new cartoon each day.

The Drabble family is standing on the Canadian side and you can see part of the American Falls and the Bridal Veil Falls behind them. They are standing behind a railing similar to this one. I like the reaction of the father. When I see the Falls every day, I take it for granted, and have said to people in the past that it is “just a bunch of water.”

The Drabble family is standing in the same spot as yesterday, and are thinking about how the Falls have been around for thousands of years.

From Niagara This Week:
City politicians are hoping the new boss at the city’s two casinos will accept an invitation to show up at city council to once and for all clear the air about just what exactly Falls Management Co. owes the city in terms of major tourism attractions, as part of its winning bid to design, finance and build the Niagara Fallsview Casino.
Be sure to read the rest of the article about this latest controversery between the City and Falls Management Company.
From Niagara This Week:
When the gleaming Niagara Fallsview Casino held its grand opening in the spring of last year, it was heralded by some dignitaries at the gala event as a new Wonder of the World, one that would continue the Honeymoon Capital’s unprecedented economic boom.
More than a year later, the 30-storey tower of the casino gleams as brightly. But to some locals, the sheen on the megaproject appears to have hit a snag: the province of late has been raking in less money with four commercial casinos than before the $1 billion Fallsview Casino opened its doors with much fanfare.
But some locals residents and politicians are more concerned bout what happened to promised tourism projects that were supposed to be built as part of the winning bid by Falls Management Co., one of several constortiums competing for the lucrative project, to finance, build and operate the casino.

From Niagara This Week:
A proposal for the highest hotel and observation tower yet in Niagara Falls’ bustling tourist district is receiving an enthusiastic response from Niagara regional councillors.
“It is a beautiful building,” said Bill Smeaton, a Niagara Falls regional councillor who chairs Niagara Region’s planning services committee, after Michael Kirkland, the architect whose Toronto-based firm is responsible for its design, displayed graphic renderings of what the 59-storey structure would look like in the north end of the district, near Rainbow Bridge.
We posted on this before. Be sure to read the rest of the article to learn more detail of the project and what other regional approvals are needed.

I knew that the Great Wolf Lodge was under construction, but it’s not really near anything in the main tourist area, so I’ve haven’t been by it since they started. Wow, it’s huge! These small pictures don’t really do it justice. It is curved, almost in an L shape. It looks like the waterpark is going to be on the other side, away from the parking lot and road.

Both the sign and the web site claim it will be open in Spring 2006. You can see more pictures on the City of Niagara Falls web site.
You’ve got to check out this great picture of the Niagara Falls area from the NASA Earth Observatory web site:
A blue-green veil of water tumbles 51 meters over the rocky precipice of the Niagara Falls in this Ikonos image, acquired on August 2, 2004. Every second, more than two million liters of water plummets over the half-circle of the Canadian/Horseshoe portion of the Niagara Falls, shown here, making it one of the world’s largest waterfalls. The force of the pounding water is sending a cloud of mist up from the bottom of the falls; this same force eats away at the rock behind the falls, pushing them back as much as two meters per year.
You can also see some less detailed photos on the NASA Gateway to Astronaut Photography web site. When you are on the site you keep clicking on the map to drill down to specific areas of the world.
The NASA Visible Earth project web site also has a lot of images. You can search for Niagara Falls and find a couple of images.
Lastly, here is a good shot of the entire Niagara River.
