Another Restaurant and Retail Location

Last fall some demolition took place in a lot beside the Clarion President Hotel & Suites By The Falls and across from the Movieland/Clifton Hill billboard.

I noticed yesterday that there was a notice of a public hearing:

The City of Niagara Falls
Committee of Adjustment
Public Hearing
Date - September 20/05 5:00 p.m.
Committee Room 2, City Hall
4310 Queen Street, Niagara Falls

File - A-47/2005
Variances from the minimum setback from the centre line of Stanley Avenue and from the “lot” definition of the by-law for the construction of a restaurant & retail outlet

Additional information and a copy of the written notice available by contacting Planning & Development City Hall, 8:30 - 4:30, Phone 905-356-7521 ext. 4239

The lot has been empty for a year already. I don’t know what the outcome of the meetings were. if I find anything out, I’ll post it.

Mystery Maze leaflet

Clifton Hill is only 1 block long, and there is only 1 real side street. On the north side of the street is Oneida Lane. This is the corner where the giant Frankenstein is eating his Whopper. At the end of Oneida Lane is Mystery Maze. It’s a fun little attraction where you run through the maze to get to checkpoints, while trying to do it as fast as you can. Mystery Maze has been there a long time, back into the Maple Leaf Village days.

I’ve scanned their promotional leaflet and included the text below:

Front of leaflet:

Mystery Maze
Get Lost!

Getting lost has never been so much fun!

Back of leaflet:

No map, No Directions!
Only your senses can guide you through.
Get Lost!
Discover an adventure that will test your sense of direction.
Who will be the fastest to navigate this challenging maze and be the first to capture the castle towers?
Fun for all ages.
Get lost today in Niagara Falls at the Mystery Maze.

This was a total redesign from the previous leaflets. The maze used to be grey and then was painted green and purple (much more eye-catching) and the leaflet was redesigned to match the design of the attraction. You can see the older leaflet here.

You can see pictures of Mystery Maze in the AccessNiagara Mystery Maze Gallery (remember, the pictures never look as good as the real thing).

Sounds of Niagara Falls

When I’m out and around, I’m usually listening to music, but over the last week or so I’ve turned it off so I can enjoy the sounds of Niagara Falls. Here are some of the things I’ve heard:

Gas Prices in Niagara Falls

In Canada, gas prices are listed per litre instead of per gallon. According to Google, 1 US gallon = 3.7854118 litres. We have a lot of taxes on our gas, so the prices are always higher than in the US.

Anyway, if you are looking to find out what the price of gas is, then the best place to look at OntarioGasPrices.com. This is part of the much larger GasBuddy.com chain of sites. According to the Niagara Falls page, the price of gas ranges from 109.3¢/L to 109.9¢/L. The price of gas in Niagara Falls is almost always a few cents more per litre than surrounding areas. Prices in St. Catharines currently range from 102.3¢/L to 103.9¢/L.

Planet Hollywood leaflet

The arrival of Casino Niagara brought a lot of bigger name restaurants to the Niagara area. Planet Hollywood was one of the first. They have a large building, with handprints out front of numerous celebrities, and the usual entertainment memorabilia inside. I’ve only eaten there once (had a burger), and I looked around almost the entire time. There is a lot to see!

I’ve scanned their promotional leaflet and included the text below:

Front of leaflet:

Planet Hollywood

Eat, Drink and Feel famous

Falls Avenue

Back of leaflet:

Inspired by film and television, Planet Hollywood is full of excitement and glamour. With rare memorabilia and superb, freshly prepared cuisine…
there’s no place like Planet Hollywood.

The back of the previous leaflet is exactly the same. The front has changed slightly. There used to be a big picture of N’Sync and Britney Spears. The newer leaflet has a picture of Sylvester Stalone, Jackie Chan, and 2 kids eating. In 2003 it said that it was next to Casino Niagara. The 2005 leaflet says it is next to the Hershey Store. You can see the older leaflet here.

Brick City leaflet

In the building that used to be the Adventure Dome, Brick City opened this spring. It is a very large collection of Lego scenes put together as a city. There is a soccer stadium, a rock concert, a harbour, bridges, large buildings, trains, and more.

Dinosaur Park Miniature Golf leaflet

Dinosaur Park has been on Clifton Hill since 1992. It was originally in front of the Quality Inn, right at the street. A few years go when the Boston Pizza was built, Dinosaur Park moved to it’s current location, in front of the Comfort Inn behind Ripley’s museum. It has always been one of my favourite attractions. The landscaping is beautiful and it is quite enjoyable walking through the course.

I’ve scanned their promotional leaflet and included the text below:

Front of leaflet:

The Street of Fun by the Falls

Back of leaflet:

Previous version of the leaflet were essentially the same. The message on the back has remained the same, while the type face of the message as well as the Clifton Hill logo have changed. You can see a previous version here.
