From Rogers Sportsnet (from CP):
Daly can’t conquer the Falls
Daly was promoting the new $15-million Thundering Waters Golf Club will be the site of the Canadian Tour, Sept. 13-18.
NIAGARA FALLS, Ont. (CP) — John Daly gripped it and ripped it, but even The Lion couldn’t tame mighty Niagara Falls.
The 39-year old PGA Tour veteran, known as one of the longest drivers in golf, failed to clear the Horseshoe Falls in 20 attempts Wednesday night.
Thousands of people who gathered at Table Rock and those watching on television saw ball after ball disappear into the mist of the Horseshoe Falls.
“Once it got into the mist, you couldn’t see it. I think it just hit that mist and dropped,” Daly said afterward. “I hit some really good balls. There were about eight of them that I just pounded on that I couldn’t have hit any better.”
After 40 minutes of lead up during the television broadcast, Daly finally stepped up to the first of what was supposed to be two tee boxes for his first 10 attempts.
The crowd cheered wildly as the first shot went up and they were even louder when an announcer said the second shot hit the gorge wall just below the Terrapin Point landing area on Goat Island.
But after smashing the third shot, Daly said he didn’t think he could hit it any better than he had.
