HIGGS: Niagara Falls hotels through the ages

    From the Niagara Gazette:

Never let it be said that you could not get a room when visiting Niagara Falls during its early years before it was a city. There were 70 hotels and saloons listed in the Town of Niagara alone. This was before Niagara Falls was a city. Names we probably never heard of, such as the American Hotel at Niagara and Fourth streets, which was razed in 1929. The American Hotel in Suspension Bridge Village was removed May 18, 1887 and another American Hotel during 1878 was in Lewiston, built in the 1830s and burned in 1893 and rebuilt as Cornell House in 1894. I am not listing them all – only the ones I was able to find some items of interest on them.

    From the Tonawanda News:

The Factory Outlets of Niagara Falls mall may be planning an expansion.

Town of Niagara board members discussed the mall’s expansion during a budget meeting on Wednesday night but said that they had been offered no specifics by Macerich Partnership L.P., the company that owns the mall.

Charles Teixeira, a town board member, said that the town has not received any documents from the company outlining their plans for the expansion.

“There’s nothing technically of an expansion, per se, in writing,” Teixeira said. “It’s all hearsay.”

It’s a strange way to observe ‘Family Day’

    From the Niagara Gazette:

If you were driving anywhere near the border Monday, there’s a chance you observed the traffic lines waiting to cross the international bridges.

It was, of course , the day for U.S. residents to honor their presidents.

Meanwhile, in Ontario, it was a holiday called Family Day.

Canadians seem to have a problem with how to spend their day while Americans can’t agree on how to spell it.

Supposedly the Ontario holiday was designed for families to spend more time together, either at the Fashions Outlets, Military Road, Town of Niagara, or perhaps sitting in the car for more than an hour to pass through customs.

    From the Buffalo News:

The Fashion Outlets of Niagara Falls in the Town of Niagara is making room for three new stores and bringing its interior to 100 percent occupancy.

Both denim retailer Levi’s and trendy women’s store Charlotte Russe are slated to open by spring. A BCBG outlet, selling discounted women’s clothing from designer Max Azria, is scheduled to be open in time for the mall’s Midnight Madness party, which kicks off on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving, to usher in the holiday shopping season.

The Levi’s outlet of about 3,900 square feet will be located across from Saks Off Fifth. Calendar Club, a seasonal specialty store, now occupies the space under a temporary lease.
