Opening day brings addition to fence for Marineland

    From Niagara This Week:

A familiar sight will be awaiting Marineland when it opens for its 58th season Saturday: Protestors.

But those protestors will be seeing something different: A long, blacked-out section of the fence dividing the property from Portage Road. It spans the grounds where protestors are legally allowed to gather, in the area across from the Rapidsview parking lot.

    Qila Restaurant torn down

The other day I noticed that the Qila Restaurant at the corner of Victoria Ave and Magdalen St was torn down. I don’t know why, and I don’t recall seeing any signs. Just one day I noticed it was gone.

The first image shows what it looked like (a screenshot from Google Maps). The other two are pictures of what the lot is now. It has been turned into a parking lot.

    Antica Pizzeria & Ristorante expanding?

As a follow-up to my “Center Gift Shop” torn down for a parking lot posting last week, regular visitor Drafty found a document on the city web site (or here if the city website link changes) that indicates that Antica Pizzeria & Ristorante will be expanding into the space where Center Gift Shop was. A public meeting was held back at the beginning of November.

I guess until they are ready to expand, it’ll be used as a parking lot.

“Center Gift Shop” torn down for a parking lot

The former “Center Gift Shop” store that was on Victoria Avenue has been closed for several months. I’m not sure why, and I never noticed any signs on the window that indicated that they would be closing. Just one day I noticed it was closed.

Well, now the building has been torn down, and it is a parking lot. This happened just before Christmas.

Here are a few other photos showing the work as it happened.

Paid parking coming to Niagara Glen, Thompson Point

    From Niagara This Week:

Visitors will now have to pay for parking at two Niagara Parks lots.

Visitors to Thompson Point will be charged for parking starting this month while the same will come to the lot at the Niagara Glen Nature Centre starting next spring.

In a news release, the Niagara Parks Commission said it is introducing paid parking to “better manage and control the limited number of parking spaces at these locations, as well as to reduce the heavy congestion of vehicles, which occurs at these popular nature sites, during the peak tourism months.”

Latest photos of Clifton Hill redevelopment

The Niagara Falls Review had a decent article about the changes happening on the HOCO Entertainment & Resorts property on Clifton Hill.

At the request of @chuckfromcanada on Twitter, I’ve taken some pictures so you can see what’s been going on. You can click on each photo to get more details about it.

Overall the site is looking good.

    • It is much cleaner than it was. The new parking lot is huge and there is no gravel parking now. It is all paved.
    • Kelsey’s is open and is now called Kelsey’s Roadhouse. I’ve been inside and it is gorgeous! The patio is still being worked on.
    • Ripley’s (I didn’t take any pictures) is open and supposedly is much bigger than it was.

It looks like everyone is ready for a busy summer!

Remember when the former location of Jack’s Cantina burned down? That was 3 1/2 years ago, and the lot has sat empty/fenced for all this time.
Within the last couple of weeks it was cleared and is now a small parking lot. part of the parking is for Spicy Olive employees, and the rest is paid parking.

NPC unveils plans for Niagara zip line attraction

    From the St Catharines Standard:

Four zip line attractions could be up and running next year in Niagara Falls if a proposal by the Niagara Parks Commission gets the green light.

The agency held a public information session Thursday at the School of Horticulture to unveil plans for what it hopes will be the newest Niagara Falls attraction.

The proposed zip line sites include a line that runs parallel to the Whirlpool Aero Car above the whirlpool and a second one that would run from the Maid of the Mist boat plaza to the power station near the base of the Falls.

A third line will operate from Rapidsview parking lot and a fourth will be at Thompson Point.

    Sign in Thirftlodge parking lot

This isn’t anything terrbily exciting, but I liked it, so I figured I’d share it.

The other day I was walking through the Thriftlodge at the Falls parking lot (on CLifton Hill) and saw this little green glow-in-the-dark (I assume it is) sign. I guess seeing a little alien would make you slow down 🙂
