Photography business rising from the ashes

From the Niagara Falls Review:

It was a nightmare.

K.J. Dong Jia was at home on January 15, 2016 when he received a call from his alarm company.

A fire, deliberately set, had swept through his themed photography business on Victoria Avenue near Clifton Hill.

“I came right away,” the 35-year-old father of three recalled. “It was such a nightmare.”

Damage was pegged at $300,000.

“I had to rebuild everything,” he said.

Jia had opened Allways Antique Photo in the heart of the city’s tourism sector in 2012 after operating similar operations in Toronto and Alberta.

The business is a combination of what Jia knows best – business and photography.

Mirror maze attraction coming to Clifton Hill

Note: The Review is a little slow on this one. I posted about this back at the beginning of June. Of course, they were able to get more details than I posted.

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Construction has begun on a $3-million circus-themed mirror and laser-maze attraction on Clifton Hill.

It will replace the former Brick City, which was a giant mini city of Legos.

That attraction was demolished last fall after a fire in the attic of the Haunted House next door in August 2014 caused water and smoke damage.

“It was a gift store that was built in 1960, and then it had a Cinema 180 movie theatre on top of it, which then became Brick City,” said Niagara Clifton Group president Charlie Burland…

He said construction on the 2,500-square-foot Big Top Amazing Mirror and Laser Maze attraction began right after Labour Day, and the aim is to open between April and June.

He said the Big Top Amazing Mirror and Laser Maze will cost around $3 million.

Fire at Niagara Falls motel

From the Niagara Falls Review:

Police continue to investigate a fire they say was deliberately set Tuesday at a Lundy’s Lane motel in Niagara Falls.

Niagara Regional Police said they responded to a working fire at the Value Inn at approximately 5:30 p.m.

They said the fire was quickly extinguished and damage was contained to one room. The motel was vacant and not in operation at the time of the fire.

Brick City is back?!

You may recall that Brick City used to be on Clifton Hill (in the old Adventure Dome). It was operated by Niagara Clifton Group. However, after a fire in 2014, it was closed, and eventually the building was demolished. I hadn’t heard anything about the Brick City attraction, so I assumed that it was gone forever. However, the other day I was walking up Oneida Lane (off of Clifton Hill… the same street where Mystery Maze is) and there was a building beside the Upside Down House called Brick City. What?!

They don’t seem to have a real web page, but they do have a page on Facebook. It looks like the re-opened in April. I’m surprised I never heard about this.

Maid of the Mist burned in 1955

As I was moving the AccessNiagara.com web site, I came across this old newspaper scan. I can’t remember at all where I got it from, but it highlights the historical event of when a couple of the Maid of the Mist boats had a fire. It happened in 1955, and the photo/article mentions it was the 50th anniversary, so I assume this is from 2005.

New attraction coming to Clifton Hill in place of Brick City

A couple of days ago I noticed some new banners/signs along the fencing where Brick City used to be. You may recall that there was a fire almost two years ago in the Haunted House attraction (see here, here or here) and Brick City ended up with a lot of water damage. The ended up tearing the place down and it has been empty for a year or so. Now it appears they are finally going to move ahead with a new development… The Big Top Amazing Mirror & Laser Maze.

Back in July you may recall that Bravo Pizzeria + Grill had a fire. They have been closed for 4+ months, but they will be reopening next week. According to their website, it was an electrical fire caused by one of their exterior signs.

Parking lot at Centre St and Ellen Ave

Remember when the former location of Jack’s Cantina burned down? That was 3 1/2 years ago, and the lot has sat empty/fenced for all this time.
Within the last couple of weeks it was cleared and is now a small parking lot. part of the parking is for Spicy Olive employees, and the rest is paid parking.

Fire at Falls pizzeria

From the Niagara Falls Review:

The Niagara Falls Fire Department were called to a fire at Bravo Pizzeria & Grill on Ferry St. at around 3 a.m. Friday.

Platoon Chief Wayne Willett said a passerby saw smoke coming from the building and called emergency personnel.

Willett said the fire originated in the upper left area at the front of the building.

Willett said the fire caused approximately $75,000 in damage.

I walked by there the very next day and everything was pretty much cleaned up. You can see where the fire burned at the front, and there was a very strong smell of ash/burned wood.

Here is what it looked like last week when I was by:

Attractions closed after Clifton Hill blaze

From the Niagara Falls Review:

A small electrical blaze on Sunday led to the closure of nearly an entire block of attractions on Clifton Hill Monday.

Brick City, The Haunted House, Bronto’s Playland and The Fun House, along with a gift shop, were all closed from water damage after firefighters put out a minor fire Sunday around 12:30 p.m.

The blaze started in the attic of The Haunted House and was quickly put out, but water from the hoses forced the attractions to close. Guests at the nearby Travelodge at the Falls also had to be relocated to other hotels when the power went out Sunday.
