Best of Access Niagara – My visits to Canyon Creek Chophouse

This is a continuation of my “Best of Access Niagara” series. This series looks back on popular posts, highly commented posts, my favourite places, etc.

It looks like my first mention of Canyon Creek Chophouse was in April 2007 as a result of a newsletter from the city talking about how they had opened. To tell you the truth, I had never set foot in either Casino before, and had no idea there was a big shopping area inside the Fallsview Casino. I had heard about the buffet, but I assumed everything was connected to the gaming floor somehow.

Anyway, at some point I was contacted by someone who worked there and they offered me a complimentary meal in exchange for writing about the restaurant. I took my family there (5 of us) and had an amazing dinner. It was so good, that my wife and I continued to go for many years (and we paid our own way!). Whenever someone would ask me about a good restaurant in the area, I would always tell them about Canyon Creek Chophouse.

The restaurant is situated right up against the windows on the back side of the Fallsview Casino building, so you get a great view of the Falls.

The menu has changed quite a bit. We went a year or two ago, and they didn’t have the same items, and we were both really disappointed. We tried a couple of other things, and just didn’t care for them. I’m sure it is still a popular restaurant, but it’s not really one that we’ll go back to again.

Here is a post I put up about an anniversary dinner I had there with my wife.

My anniversary dinner at Canyon Creek Chophouse

As I tweeted (here, here, and here), I went to Canyon Creek Chophouse (inside the Fallsview Casino Resort) on Thursday with my wife for our anniversary dinner. This has become a tradition for us and we quite enjoy. This trip was no exception.

We had reservations for 5 pm (kind of early), so the restaurant obviously wasn’t very busy. As you recall, the weather on Thursday was beautiful, so there was lots of sunshine coming in the windows. We sat in the 4th booth from the corner in order to avoid the sun in our eyes.

Our server Jerry was there when we needed him, but not too intrusive. At one point one of the managers, Vita (not sure how to spell the name) came by to make sure everything was good (which of course, it was).

Before you have your meal, they bring out a small loaf of amazing 7-grain bread with honey butter. My wife liked it so much a few visits ago, that she went online and found a recipe for honey butter and now makes it for all of our big family meals.

As a starter, we had the Canyon Creek Dip (“Creamy blend of fresh spinach, artichokes and Asiago cheese served with warm nacho chips and salsa”). For dinner I had the Chicago-cut Striploin (“10 oz, 2-inch thick steak, brushed with butter and served with Cabernet roasted garlic jus and crisp onion straws”) with garlic mashed potatoes and Caesar salad. I also had a side of sautéed mushrooms with my meal. My wife had the Chicken Chop (“Double chicken supreme stuffed with roasted garlic and sun-dried tomato goat cheese, rubbed with Cajun butter and baked to perfection. Served with rice pilaf”) and broccoli. For dessert, we shared a Key Lime pie. They knew it was our anniversary, so there was a small sparkler on top when it was delivered. It was all fantastic.

Thanks go out to regular commenter Dan M who works there. He made the reservations for us, and made sure we were treated well (this was the first time he wasn’t working when we went).

I didn’t take any pictures inside the restaurant, but did take a few outside.

On Wednesday I received a short email from Canyon Creek Chophouse:

This was a great deal, but unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it. They didn’t give much notice (got it on Wednesday, the special was for Thursday), but I’m sure that was intentional (they probably want to limit the number of cards they have to give out).

For what it’s worth, I still can’t say enough good things about the restaurant. I’ve only heard of one person who went and didn’t enjoy it (food was cold, undercooked, etc), but everyone else’s experience has been as good as mine. They can’t be perfect 100% of the time, but they can be close.

I received this email newsletter from Canyon Creek Chophouse last Tuesday. They were promoting an event for the next day.

I have no idea how I got on a mailing list for them, but I’m quite happy to receive them.
